Aussie PS3 launch events draw modest crowds
Hundreds show up for midnight launches across Australia; retailers boasting record presales amounts.
The PlayStation 3 officially went on sale in Australia overnight, with hundreds of gamers lining up outside more than 500 retail stores across the nation to purchase Sony's latest console at midnight launch events.

The largest event was held at Sydney's Pitt St mall, where retail store Myer and Sony Computer Entertainment Australia teamed up to present launch-night activities, which included prize giveaways, live demonstrations, and a screening of Casino Royale on the big screen. Approximately 70 people lined up to grab their consoles at the Myer Pitt St store, with a hundred-strong crowd looking on. The PS3's arrival comes exactly one year after Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched in Australia. Microsoft's launch event for the 360--which was also held in Sydney's Pitt St mall--drew a crowd of close to 1,000 people.

Approximately 70 people lined up at the Myer launch event.

Other retailers across Sydney also held launch events, most of which drew modest crowds. The Harvey Norman store at the Moore Park SupaCenta had close to 40 people attend its midnight launch activities, which included an appearance from Australian boxing great Kostya Tszyu. Tszyu was on hand to demo Fight Night Round 3, as well as sign the first PS3 sold at the store.

Over at EB Games at Bondi Junction in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, the launch crowd was even smaller, with approximately 20 people lined up outside the store to purchase their PS3s. Five major retailers opened late in the large shopping district of Chatswood, on Sydney's North Shore. The EB Games at Chatswood had about 30 customers in line, while the near-by Toys 'R' Us store scored 20.

Despite the low turnout, retailers were generally positive about the launch of Sony's next-generation product. Myer chief executive officer Bernie Brooks said his chain of stores experienced an extremely high number of PS3 presales, citing the figure at more than A$2 million. Harvey Norman, general manager for computers and communications at Rutland Smith, said his company is estimating that the PS3 will generate close to A$10 million in sales by Monday, with 50 percent coming from preorders.

Sony is also bullish, reporting that more than A$20 million worth of PS3s had been preordered prior to launch.

Business issues didn't concern gamers waiting in line for their console, though. Danny Zarka, the first person in line at Myer's Pitt St store, said he had been anxiously awaiting the PS3 for more than a year.

Now we see how Sony does, their precious console has hit down under which has become a haven for Sony fanboys recently.

i'm so confuzzled by all the numbers and odd names

did Sony do good or do badly?

It seems like Sony did pretty average.

Considering the crowds were smaller than the 360 ones. And I think the Wii launch was bigger than or equal to 360's.
i'd guess Wii was bigger. you mentioned people waiting for the Wii for awhile and highly anticipating its launch. you never mentioned people caring much bout the 360 launch down under
Thats because that was before WL's time. From what I remember it was pretty big. But then again Microsoft does have lots of money to burn.

Today is tomorrow in Australia. Not just is it tomorrow, but it's coming on noon. According to The Sydney Morning Herald the PlayStation 3 launched last night with "officials, media and security outnumbering customers." The 500 retailers on the continent opened their doors for a midnight launch and despite the estimated 20,000 pre-orders "most stores were virtually deserted."

The Herald says even the official launch event at Myer's Pitt Street store had only 40 people in line at midnight "causing distress for the army of camera crews who turned up expecting to capture launch mayhem." The gentlemen who ended up being first in line showed up at 9 PM. Adding insult to injury, television producers "unashamedly" had the crowd fake cheer for the cameras. A local radio station even had their on-air talent create "bogus cheers" to convince listeners that a major event was going on. Looks like the hype accompanying the U.S. launch has all but vanished. We'll get a better picture of the PS3 PAL release later this evening when reports of the European launch trickle in. Maybe the land down under is just full of Xbox and Nintendo fanboys?

Fake cheering? You're kidding right?

Not positive at all. Come on Sony, look at this mess.
Can you tell me how many systems Sony had at Launch for the Aussie's. I would guess many people preordered the system and if numbers were low, then there would be no reason for people to line up.
Um here's something you might want to look at before jumping to conclusions lemonmanX, again this is just a rumor, but still

Rumor: Australian PS3 Launch Allocation A Little Thin

A couple of tipsters have let me know today that the PS3 launch allocations for Australia have been disclosed to select retailers. According to them, how many are we getting?

11,000.

That's...wow, that's not very many. Not very many at all. Then again, at AUD$1000 a pop there might only be 11,000 people in the country willing to pick one up.

Keep in mind this is just a rumor - we'll be getting firmer details on the Aussie launch on Thursday.

Sheesh. Looks like you didn't really get the facts straight, LMX.

Man, Sony is definitely not doing very well around the world at all.
Well, considering the fact that all of the UK got SHAFTED in the pricing of the PS3 (paying the equivalent of ~$850 US), it's not really surprising that the console didn't do so well over there.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people are waiting for a price drop that probably won't happen for a few years.
I got that stuff from Kotaku and Gamespot.

It doesn't surprise me that Sony wouldn't have provided many PS3's to Australia and well, to be honest... they'll pay the price.
PS3's are $1000 AUS.

If there are 11 000 people in Australia willing to pay that kind of money for a console, you can color me surprised.
$1,000 for the PS3.
$120 for games I think.

Sony can go to Hell for those price tags.
Yeah that's insane.

If I only lived on impulse I might consider buying one. Heck I wouldn't have even considered it...I'd already have bought it hah...But when applying logic to a situation, there's no sense at all in spending that much cash on a console considering that the exchange rate on the Aussie dollar is about 1.23, Sony is out of thier head.

You'd be better off just saving up your money for future Wii titles, maybe pimping out your Mac/PC, and just waiting for Sony to cave and finally drop their price.

but when you wrote...

"Considering the crowds were smaller than the 360 ones. And I think the Wii launch was bigger than or equal to 360's."

it game the simple impression that there wasn't much interest, but we wouldn't expect the same lines as other consoles if there aren't that many systems at launch. i think it's the case of giving some information, but withholding just enough to try and make a point.

Yes, but do you really think the general public knew that they would supply so little?

Media was lined up ready for some exciting launch footage, but got nowhere near what they had been expecting.

Australia will await a price drop too by the looks.
One more nail in the sony coffin... need i say more?

Why would the Aussie's been any different then what were are. We knew the PS3 and Nintendo Wii would have limited supplies, so I can't imagine that they are any less savvy.

People knew that there were limited supplies, but it didn't stop them from camping out for one for days. In my locale, there were about 80-100 people lined up for the Wii launch at Walmart. We only got 20.

From the sounds of it, it seems like the Australian stores didn't even have to turn anyone away.
