Full Version: Looks like Sony will miss their goal

With the talk of Nintendo reaching their goal of 6 million I checked to see if Sony met it's goal with the PS3. After setting a goal of 6 million by the end of March and then cutting it down to 4.5 it seems like Sony is only half way there. vgcharts.org has the PS3 at 2.67 million. Wikipedia says 1.65 million sold with a little over 2 million shipped. And the nexgenwars counter is at 1.7 million, which I feel is off.

So did Sony just miscalculate the demand for it's console, or were they just not able to produce them fast enough?
In my humble opinion, Sony really blew it t E3 when they said their system was going to cost five-hundred-ninety-nine US Dollars. Also, there was a video on youtube.com that shows that Sony made a lot of changes to the plan that contradicted what was said at E3 2005. Finally, I believe that Sony just doesn't have the "wow" factor that the PSX and PS2 had before it to sell well, like the Nintendo Wii has right now.
Not really surprising that they would fall short.

For one thing: the price. Ay, the price...

For another: With the PS2 still alive and kicking, what reason is there to switch to the PS3? Especially with games like God of War II just coming out.

Really, Sony's best bet would be to ditch the PS2 (stop manufacturing it, and stop letting developers make games for it), and focus on the PS3. If God of War II had been revamped for the PS3, and did not come out on the PS2, you can bet that there would've been a nice bump in sales.

At least, that's my two cents.
God of War II looks awesome. If I wasn't planning on getting a 360 later I'd probably get a PS2.
Looks like what Nintendo did back in the day... hang on to and support the NES for so long (due to it's market dominance) while still trying to market the SNES.
It's funny but the PS2 is still the best seller over here and PS3 is the worst. I've heard some rumblings about the return of the PS3 later near the end of the year but only time will tell. They have indeed missed their mark and I wonder what they have to say about that.

I couldn't agree more, no wow factor hurts in the long run.

the PS2 had "wow" factor?

I think the main selling point for the PS2, aside from riding the PSX's success, is that it literally had ALL THE GAMES. The Xbox and Gamecube were the better systems, but they didn't have the sheer number of games that the PS2 had.
Now, with the 360 having a year's head start on the PS3, and getting a bigger install base, we're seeing Sony lose developers, who are looking to the 360 to make their money.
So, since a lot of former PS titles losing their exclusivity, accompanied with the 360's larger library of games, it's really no wonder that the consumer isn't picking up a PS3. Not to mention the price tag.
Its all about the price. Sony had a lot going for them coming into this generation of consoles, with over 110 million PS2s sold, but they blew it by deciding to go for the higher price point. They assumed that gamers would pay anything to get a console if they really wanted it. They pushed it too far.

I was one who was relatively undecided on which console to put alongside my Wii early last year. At E3 2006 when they announced the price of the PS3 I went out and bought an Xbox 360 the very next day. And now the hole continues to get deeper, with so many former major PlayStation exclusives going multi-platform.

PS4 by 2009?
PS4 by 2008, to make sony safe. hehe

Sony didnt only miss the goal, they <insert snappy line>
Wah wah wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah *sounds better than it looks*

Sony wanted their system to sell based on the hype wave of it's first two systems and it crashed on the price sandbar, end of story.

if sony released the PS3 without blu ray (or blu ray optional) and graphics comparable to 360, they would probably still be on top right now
