Here is an interview with Ed Boon (Creator) that was released today on IGN about the upcoming Mortal Kombat game for the Wii.
IGN Wii: Tell fans not familiar with the franchise - there must be one or two of them - what Mortal Kombat Armageddon is all about.
Well, Mortal Kombat has been around 15 years now and a big part of fighting in Mortal Kombat has always been about doing special moves - the projectiles, teleporting and all the supernatural stuff. Traditionally - for 15 years - doing those moves has involved a somewhat complex sequence of directional pad and button combinations. While that was very cool, there was a certain number of people who weren't able to grasp that whole thing. So what we did with the Wii version was we took advantage of the system's gestures and motions and linked them to those special moves and basically made the game a lot more accessible. That's what we've really found in doing that - there was a lot of people who could never do special moves or fatalities or teleport and throw spears, and they are all of a sudden able to do these moves. A much wider range of people are now able to enjoy what Mortal Kombat has to offer.
ION: How many fighters are in the Wii version of the game?
The game has 64 fighters. It's basically every character from the Mortal Kombat universe put together, so every dream scenario that anybody has thought of. What would happen if Kintaro fought against Tanya or Sektor fought against Rain? There's just every match-up that can be in this version.
IGN Wii: And does each character have a unique fatality (the gory finishing moves that have become a trademark of the franchise)?
Well, Mortal Kombat Armageddon introduced the create-a-fatality feature, which basically gives the player the ability to kind of create his own fatality. So, you know, he can tear a guy's head off, rip his arm off, hit him with the arm and what not. That's the create-a-fatality system and it's the new entry into the series.
IGN Wii: What other gameplay modes are available in the game?
Armageddon for Wii has a new mode called the endurance mode, which lets the player fight against as many opponents as he can get through with one life bar. You beat a guy, he explodes, another guy jumps on the screen and you've got to fight with however much power you have left. Every once in awhile, after every five or six opponents, you'll get a little bit of life back so you'll always have a little chance if you reach that next plateau. Other than that, we have a whole new Wii training mode that gets people accustomed to the motion gestures for their characters - they can polish up without being in an intense fighting scenario. And as everybody knows, in Armageddon we have a single-player Konquest mode, which is like an adventure mode in itself. And we also have a diversion called Motor Kombat, which is like Mario Kart meets Mortal Kombat.
There is more but you can read the rest here.
