For ages now i've been wondering why my Wii couldn't connect to 802.11g. I kept contacting Nintendo and they in turn kept getting reassured that there was no problem and that Wii was BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE with 802.11g.

So there we have it. The Wii will only run at 802.11b.


For those of you who don't know what the hell i'm on about here we go.

802.11b is a wireless transmission mode as is 802.11g.

When people get High Speed Broadband Internet, they usually get it in mbps or mega-bits-per-second. For instance, I have 100 mbps, which Americans would think is slow. Many Americans have 800 mbps. With wireless routers, they usually don't output that speed of internet, they usually limit it. 802.11b (what Wii and DS can ONLY use) is 11 mbps. Basically around 10 times slower than my 100 mbps and 80 times slower if your lucky and have 800 mbps!!!!!!!

802.11g on the other hand outputs at 54 mbps. Roughly 5 times faster than 802.11b. But no, Nintendo had to cheap out and get b-only card. Grrrrrrrr...

What this would result in is games with less lag in online games and that your Wii's Opera Browser would be 5 times faster.

And one more thing. If you have an 802.11g router and your Wii can connect to it, it is not connecting to the g-mode. It means your router is set to MIXED or AUTO mode which it outputs both b and g. Your Wii connects to the former.

Well dude. We're talking about hardware here. And yes, the Wii is online! Look at the browser. I'M ON IT NOW! its hell slow... Whatever dumb reason nintendo cheaped on G-WIRELESS we'll never know

That's odd, the router I've used is a 802.11g, and I never found any options to switch it to b. I'm not wifi savy though.

I've been using a wireless B router since I hooked the Wii to the internet, and I gotta tell ya, I've had no issues with speed, as your claiming to have. You've also got to expect people to be confused about the subject, cause your claim "the truth about Wii online" is a bit broad, and not really talking about the real issue. Maybe "Nintendo Wii only uses Wireless B standard" might have been better.

Also, the speed thing could be because so many people are on the Wii and the DS. :l

Think about what your saying here... 802.11b is 11Mbps, where as G is 54Mbps. You're telling me your internet is faster than 11Mbps? i don't think so... Verizon offers 3.0Mbps and my local cable provider offers 10Mbps as there most expensive plan.

Let me know where us Americans can get 800Mbps internet, because that means I REALLY need to change my ISP....

So really there is no difference between B and G that you'll notice from the online services, you'll only notice a difference if your doing stuff on a lan, like transferring files. Next time, before you post saying that something is terrible, get your facts straight.

yea ive had no problems with uploading webpages on wii's opera browser...i dunno y ur getting delays or slow upload speeds.

Err, this is news? I found this out as soon as I tried to connect my Wii to my wireless router. Maybe it wasn't officially from Nintendo, but it's pretty obvious that if you have to allow b wireless devices to connect to your router in order for the Wii to connect, it must be a b wireless device.

And as others have said, if you're having trouble with your browsing speed it isn't the wireless connection causing the problem.

What Verizon are giving isn't 3.0 mbps. it's 3.0 MBps (mega BYTES) that translates as 300 mbps (mega BITS)

And while people wont be exactly ANNOYED, wouldn't u prefer 5X faster wi-fi if u could have it? yes

That's wrong on so many levels I don't know where to start. First, Verizon offers 3.0 Mbps (note the lower-case b), which means mega bits. Second, even if it were 3.0 MBps, it would only be 24 Mbps because there are 8 bits in a byte.

2nd 1 megabyte = 8 megabits so 3.0 Megabit = 0.375 Megabyte ...know your conversions
3rd look on verzion's site here: Verizon DSL plans

notice the lower case b making it megabits
which doesnt make it any faster... let alone 5x faster, again proving no difference between 802.11b or g

before you post saying stuff is going to suck, know what your talking about... because you sound like a fool

Heh, incidentally wouldn't 3.0 mbps technically be 3 milli-bits per second? Also I have no idea where the 5x faster part comes from, since none of those numbers have a 5x relation to each other, but then the underlying math is faulty so I don't think I'll worry about it.

wow thank you. Everyone on this site is so helpful. Oh no I screwed up. Thanks for rubbing it in... All i know is that I have whats called: "1 MEGABYTE" broadband. Then, whenever I highlite my LAN button in the bottom right of my screen it says "100 Mbps" (Mega BITS). This confused me. Now I really dont care anymore. Just lock this damn forum
