Oops. It seems like the initial "huzzah!" for the PlayStation 3 in the UK has died down, not unexpectedly. After busting records left and right upon its launch, the PS3 has snuggled into a much lower sales number last week. How much lower? Well, the first weekend saw around 165,000 units move off of shelves and the latest numbers put sales somewhere around 29,700 systems. Around an 82% decrease.

Again, this is to be expected, really. Everyone who really wanted one grabbed it as quick as they could. Now it's time for the slightly-less- to go out and get one... as soon as that paycheck clears. Movie ticket sales go down every week, too -- especially from opening weekend to the next weekend (there are, of course, exceptions). So is this really another attempt to smash Sony into the ground by the media? Probably, but it would be easier to assume that if the sales drop was, oh, less than 50%. At 82%, it's alarming enough to warrant a "hmm, what's going on here?" but not enough to start crying. Let's get some of those anticipated titles out there! It may help.

That really sucks, especially considered Europe is the "home of Sony".

I would expect a sales drop. But not so much, thats just insane..

I'd have to agree with the article and say that most if not everyone who wanted the PS3 right away were able to pick it up. So now you have those who will wait and see and maybe pick it up later, so I'd expect sales to drop. This really isn't a huge surprise because current demand has been met so supply isn't moving

HAHAHA, It will only pick up after a tremendous price cut.

Wii FTW

PS3 FTF
I think a big deal is the cost of the PS3 in the UK. We talk here about it being expensive at $600 USD, but in the UK it costs 425 GBP which equals $840 USD as of todays current exchange rate. I know myself if I had to pay $840 instead of $600, I probably wouldn't have purchased a PS3 yet. After all, this is a 40% increase over the price in the US, which is alot.
82%? That's quite a drop. Too bad... maybe they should include more tvs? =p
PWN3D!!!
It's actually not that surprising, seeing that consumer demand has been met, and the fact that it didn't launch near Christmas.

Yep, with the TV I'd get it cuz my TV is old. Getting a new one but have to wait until Feb next year! Loonnngggg time away...

Wow this and Wii has double the sales of the PS3 in Japan now according to IGN.
That's because all 30 people that wanted PS3s now have them.

My local HMV is having difficulty shifting the first shipment, they got 50 and still have 24 >_<

Actually, the PS3 sold more units than either the Wii or the 360 did at launch.

Sony just shipped way too many for it to sell out.

Where's the source on that. Sony only had 400,000 units for the NA launch while Wii had a million. So that doesn't add up.

Well, this is the UK launch, not the NA one.

Oh, there shortages all across Europe during Wii's launch.
I don't think that was the point ihavewiiproblems was getting at. He sourced the info, and no matter what the shortages were, his explanation or figures are true.
