Full Version: MGS4 to Remain PS3 Exclusive

Gaming blog Kotaku recently caught up with Hideo Kojima, the brains behind the influential Metal Gear series, shortly after his keynote address at last week's GO3 expo in Perth, Australia. Although both Kojima's speech and the subsequent interview run across the whole gamut of Kojima's development experience, Kotaku asked the question that has been plaguing the minds of PS3 and Xbox 360 fanboys alike:

Will Metal Gear Solid 4 remain PS3 exclusive?

To answer this question, Kojima, perhaps appropriately, equated the three next gen systems to a moviegoing experience.

"The PS3 is like the theatre, it's a little bit high-priced but it has to be high quality as well," he explained. "The 360 is a DVD, it still needs to be high quality but you need more variations, while the Wii is almost like a TV channel, because every game you have it with your family".

So how does this relate to PS3 exclusivity, you may ask? When the subject changed to Devil May Cry 4 going multiplatform, Kojima knew exactly where the conversation was going.

"[L]ike I said, MGS4 is aimed for the movie theatre, it's aimed for the PS3, so the game's scenario and graphics need this theatre-type hardware," Kojima responded. "It's when a producer has a game that can work on the 'DVD level' that a game will go multiplatform."

Wow...that sucks for 360 owners...
Why does that suck for 360 owners? They're already getting every other game under the sun, plus this was never anything more than a rumour so I don't think most 360 owners were expecting it.

By the way remember when whats-his-name from Capcom said Resident Evil 4 would be a GameCube exclusive and if doesn't he would saw his head off? Lo and behold a few months later they announced the game would be coming to the PS2. Never say never...
RE4 was an exclusive, but after a certain amount of time, even an exclusive can be released for other systems. I'm glad Metal Gear will be an exclusive...it'll give PS3 owners something to look forward to.
I think he basically just said the 360 can't handle MGS4.

-4 respect points.
This sucks for 360 owners cause now they have to by a PS3 to play MGS4
If only I actually wanted to play MGS4...

Though, I'm sure there'll be plenty of other (better) reasons to buy a PS3 by the time MGS comes out.
I had Metal Gear Solid for the PS and then had the 2nd one for the PS2 which I never did much with. I like the idea of the games, but since the PS version, I just never got into them all that much.
every film shown on the theatres eventually hits DVD. with DVD, you get extra content like behind the scenes footage, commentary, director's cut, etc. when it eventually hits TV, you get an edited version with no extra features and tons of commercials.

so yeah, i expect MGS4 to be a timed exclusive, and it'll eventually come to the 360.
I think we've stated before in previous posts, when a game is an exclusive, it's technically that way for only a certain amount of time, then the publishers or whomever can put them to different systems. I honestly can't think of any examples right now, but I'm sure that's the way it works.
Yeah, it'll go to 360 eventually. But by the time it does people will care less about it. In fact they might just wait and put out MGS4:Whatever the hell it'll be called out on 360, they did it with MGS2: Substance (Even though that game wasn't very good)
That's good to hear that PS3 has kept one of it's biggest exclusives.
It is, and now I still have reason to want a PS3.
So what if it's still a PS3 exclusive? One game does not a successful console make.
Twilight Princess made the Wii work... at least, made me want it at launch.
Very true, even though MGS4 won't be my type of game, it may drive people to buy a PS3, or at least make them take a second look at it.
Oh, and also. Glue Gun.

For future reference please note:

Capcom examples do not apply, they are money whores. RE4, RE5 and DMC4 are examples of this. They will take any chance to make a game multi-plat. So therefore they are not valid examples.
technically wasn't RE4 an exclusive until those "exclusive rights" finally ran out letting the game be ported to whomever?
Well apparently, since now its on GCN, PS2 and even a bad PC port. Luckily the GCN version reigns supreme, at least until the Wii one is released.

My main point is Capcom can't be used as examples.
I agree, I mean any company that will release so many darn crappy Mega Man games can't be used as any good example.
