It sure looks like it.

Recently, Sony Style US discontinued sales of the 20GB model. Now, it looks like EB games, the largest gaming retail chain in the world (partnered with GameStop), will do the same.

A manager of an EB games, under the guise of Kaiser_911, provided a tip-off that the company would no longer be purchasing the 20GB model. The reason provided in the e-mail from the higher ups was "the demand and interest in the 60GB model out weighs that of the 20GB model."

An interesting side-note on this business is the issue of customers with warranties for their 20GB models. EB is scrambling to devise some sort of trade-in policy or some other solution for the problem. More news on that later when a solution is finalized

It isn't too surprising, I mean the 60GB may cost more, but it is more bang for buck. Besides, I think Sony actually loses more money with selling the 20gig than the 60.

But I agree, its gonna be interesting to see what EB does about the warranty policy
GameStop generally offers incentives for trading in an older model for newer. had a promotion for more % trade-in when trading in an XBox for 360. likely their offer bonus for trading in 20GB for 60GB, which means i could easily buy a 20GB used and then just buy some 3rd party extended memory device (all AFTER i sell one of my kidneys of course)
Sell your love, I doubt if it will get you near as much as a kidney, but it will get your a couple dolors closer to that PS3. Ever since the PS3 debuted, the more expensive model has sold better, so this is just a good idea to discontinue the cheaper 20 gig model.
sell my love? i can't get rid of my Wii, especially not for a PS3. that's downgrading in the worst way...

and if it's better to discontinue the worst selling model, maybe Sony should strip all PS3s from the shelves Toungue
Maybe, but what would everyone ***** about on the forum then? You'd make greaser lee cry cause you'd all be complaining about the Xbox 360.

Anyhoo, sell your love didn't mean the Wii Wink but anyone who was in the know, new that the more expensive PS3 was a better deal, so if the PS3 does get an even better model, then this should work out good.
well, my "love" could've only refered to my Wii, my dog or my best friend, but i don't think anyone would've bought the latter 2 Toungue

if the larger system is the better deal, why hasn't MS cancelled the 20GB 360 yet? it even comes with the wireless controller. people are still buying the cheaper version of that one though
Um because MS wants people to purchase the cheaper 20 gig system and then have people pay all the extra money for the add-ons Smile
touche

maybe Sony should do the same. sell only the 20GB and make people buy an expanded drive for more money.

lol. you should email MS and let them know that you're on to them.

anybody who buys the core pack knows what they are getting themselves into and probably arent ever going to use any of the extra features available on the other SKUs.

I'll email them, and tell them their biggest fan (greaser lee) says hello and sends his love.

your probably right though, those buying the core wouldn't want...

wireless controller---------------------------------$49.82
Component HD AV Cable---------------------------$39.92
Hard Drive----------------------------------------$97.82
be able to play Play Original Xbox games
wouldn't need a Ethernet Cable
headset------------------------------------------$17.82
wouldn't want a 30 trial of Xbox live Gold
and wouldn't care about the Premium Chrome Details

Yeah I guess your right, that extra $100 bucks would be a waste of money Smile
please do. thx, luv.
I think this is a good move for Sony. Every store I've seen PS3's I've only seen 60 gig systems anyhow, and they seem to be selling the most. No need to make 20 gig HDs if people don't want them Smile
It would be nice to see Sony getting rid of the two SKU's of the PS3. This whole two versions of the same console is rubbish anyways.
I think of it like a VW rabbit. It's a cheaper version of the Jetta (I think) and yeah people will buy it, but just because they can't afford the Jetta. I think Microsoft and Sony should have just gone with the more expensive of their two systems and backed it by talking about how great they are and how the consumer comes out ahead in the end.
RIP 20 GB PS3.

Straight from Sony: The 20GB PS3 will no longer be offered to retailers for sale in North America. The decision was made based on consumer and retail demand favoring "the 60GB model 10 to 1."

Dave Karraker of Sony America states, "At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of ninety percent in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in Wi-Fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model."

This follows mounting evidence that the 20GB was on its way out the door at Best Buy and even the Sony Style store. And so we say goodbye to the PlayStation 3's 20GB model. Goodnight sweet Prince, we hardly knew ye.

Alright, one company finally figured it out.

Now if only Microsoft would stop producing the Core units, everyone would be happy.
The won't be offered anymore to retailers but there are still some available in stores. Once they are gone from stores that will really be it. And the Elite will eventually replace the premium unit so I think the sore once will probably stay.

PlayStation 3 is now officially 599 US dollars--and only 599 US dollars. In a move that surprises absolutely no one, Sony has officially discontinued the cheaper SKU.
