GamerNet, which is currently a working title for the system, will appear first in the next installment of the popular Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, the development of which recently switched from EA’s California studios to Madden NFL developer EA Tiburon in Orlando, Florida.
An EA rep said that GamerNet is “not necessarily” something that will be implemented into every EA Tiburon game, but “as for the future of EA… it’ll definitely set a trend.”
In Tiger Woods 08, gamers will be able to save impressive individual shots such a hole-in-one, or an entire hole or round. Players will then be able to post the content online for other connected players to view.
The EA rep explained that an in-game interface will let gamers upload and browse user-generated content. Players will be able to upload at their leisure so they don’t have to interrupt a gaming session.
He added that there will also be an online point system incorporated into GamerNet that will encourage out-of-game community competition. EA is still working out the details, but the GamerNet points system will basically feature multiple pieces of user-generated content and pit them head-to-head, with other users voting for the “best” of the bunch. As a piece of content—such as an impressive chip shot—continues to beat out other challengers based on user votes, it rises in the rankings and the user who made the content earns online points.
GamerNet will only appear in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Tiger Woods 08. The game is also headed to the PS2, PSP, DS, Wii and PC.
EA said that Tiger Woods 08 will also be the first to utilize Photo Game Face (also a working title), which will allow gamers to upload photos and use them to create photo-realistic characters.
