Charmander has a valid point. If he's saying that the Wii isn't on the same level as the 360 or PS3 then by the same idea the DS isn't on the same level as the Wii though he said they are competing with each other. He's contradicting himself.
Ummmm hold on a sec.... If the DS is made by Nintendo and the Wii is made by Nintendo then why does it matter? The money goes to Nintendo for both consoles so whats the big deal?
The person who made the comment thinks that since that the DS and Wii are both innovative machices that people will go for the handhled because it's cheaper. But yes, it's all money for Nintendo so there us kinda no point.

This is comparing apples and oranges.
A handheld portable console can't compete with a home console because they are targeted at two different branches of the same market.
The Wii and DS have similarities in innovation, but that's it. The DS is not going to hinder Wii sales. Look at how cheap both systems are. You could buy a DS and a Wii and still will not have spent as much as you would have on a PS3 or 360.
If anything the DS and Wii should be viewed in unison as a powerhouse that can take the market away from MS and Sony.
You are very wise my friend.....
I think that pizzaturdell hit the nail with the apples and oranges comparison. It all comes back to nintendo so i don't really think that the Wii and Ds could ever be in hot compation with eachother...
its still not true...the wii is definately competition for the other next gens
i bought a wii, and since i did, i wont be buying a ps3 or 360
i made my choice. millions of others did and will do the same
the ds is complementary to the wii, not in place of
what charmander said makes. and in time will come to the wii, but its not coming soon enough. if i was faced with the choice of a DS or Wii, i'd choose the DS as well for the same reason char said, and because it also has game titles from major series, that have yet to be seen on the wii. Metroid, Mario kart, kirby, mario, a decent sonic game and it goes on.
I believe in the way that they compete is that casual gamers generally only need one system to play all of their games. The DS and Wii both target casual gamesr, and thus are fighting for that market. Look at what happened to the Gameboy after the release of the DS. Games are still churning out, but even though it doesn't compete directly against the DS, they are similar enough that most people will only get one or the other (and in the DS's case, it even plays GBA games). This has virtually killed the once dominant Gameboy in favor of another Nintendo portable.
While it's a valid way to look at it, you should never overlook the synergy of a dominant handheld and console from the same company. The popularity of one can enhance the other, causing it to in turn enhance the first. This is the halo effect. People like to buy products from companies they are already familar with. While this is not a huge factor, it can make a difference and tip a person that is on the fence about which system to support. I would be suprised if Mac sales have not gone up due to the popularity of the iPod.

I couldn't agree more
It can only compete with the DS because it's the only system that's selling enough to even compete with!
Burn in your face Microsoft and Sony! XD
Umm.. MS and Sony didn't make that comment >.>
I know... I wasn't directing that at the article.

nicely said drew102e

but in that example, they are both handhelds, even the most casual of gamers doesnt think 'i just got a DS no reason to get that new wii console'
also, IMO, the DS should replace the gameboy, just as the wii replaced the gamecube, and the GBA replaced the gameboy before it
i like the synergy angle of 2nd paragraph, however the GBA was the only game in town for quite some time and the gamecube still languished in 3rd place so i dont know if thats valid
I think the DS is already on it's way to replacing the GameBoy not unless Nintendo is secretly creating another one.
Do you think that the next hand held Gen. is coming soon?
Becuase it has been like 6 or so years since the DS came out...

The DS just came out in 04 but it's about time for another GB if they are making one.
I'm kinda thinkin about a DS (and have been for a long time) so i don't really want to get one if in the next year they come out with a better one...I guess we will just have to wait and see...
If you wait another year, and a new Gameboy doesn't come out. Won't you be even closer to the next one that will supposedly come out?
The DS Lites are still selling very strong and being constantly sold out.
Nntendo has no reason to release a new GB or DS just yet. They won't even announce it till the sales start slipping.
Well, if they have good buisness sense anyway, which I think they do.
