Sony stealthily released a firmware patch for the PlayStation 3 last night that adds some rather impressive features to the system. First off, they've finally put in place the long-discussed ability for PS3 owners to play downloaded PlayStation 1 games on their PS3. There's a growing number of PS1 titles available for download on the PlayStation Network that originally required then downloading onto a PSP in order to actually enjoy. They've also put in a feature to allow transferring PS1 save game data to and from a PSP memory stick, letting you continue your saved games on the go. Pretty spiffy. Unfortunately, Joystiq is reporting that people have been having problems playing PS1 games that were already on their PSPs. Hopefully those issues get cleaned up soon.
Another major plus with this new firmware is the news that PS3s will now be compatible with any PS1 or PS2 accessory. All you need is a USB adapter for the controller and plugging it in will allow it to work. This means previously unheard of ideas such as using your PS2 Guitar Hero guitars or controllers with rumble are now possible. Sony has also added in the ability to set a specific profile on the machine to auto-login. Some sources are also reporting that backwards compatibility has been improved for the systems that don't have the PS2 hardware built-in.
All in all, a strong and unexpected showing from Sony. Let's hope the updates coming.
