IGN is reporting that the next game in the Final Fantasy series will probably be around for quite a while. If Square/Enix has anything to say about it, we'll be playing the FFXIII family of games for the next ten years. "Although speaking with a Nintendo magazine, Hashimoto brought up Final Fantasy XIII as a comparison for Square Enix's decision to expand upon the FFVII storyline through the Compilation project years after the game's original release. 'Different from something like VII, which we expanded upon afterwards, with Fabula Nova Crystallis FFXIII, we've thought about an expansive world setting from the start. Under the idea of wanting everyone to be sucked into the world for 10 years, we're preparing a number of categories.' He likened this approach to films like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings."

Chris Kohler took the time to point out that, in the same interview, the Square folks stated they're still not entirely convinced about this whole Virtual Console thing. "We feel that the Japanese game market still requires [physical] media. Also, FF and Dragon Quest are played by a wide range of users, from children to adults, so there are limitations when you consider the problems that we would have with billing systems."

*do you think Final Fantasy 13 can last for 10 years?
I saw this earlier but was too lazy to post it plus I was supposed to be doing some work. I don't know what to think about it because I'm not sure what they exactly mean. I don't think I could play any game for that long no matter how good it was and how much they added to it but who knows.
Maybe some of the worlds will be created onto specific servers, so that you don't need to download any expansion pack? I'm really not sure.
i just hope this FF series lives up to the FF name and doesnt suck like X2
It's like FFVII, they release a game, and then keep releasing games under the FFVII name, so instead of making a FFXIV, they just keep expanding on the FFXXIII storyline. It doesn't sound like a bad idea, and it could really wrap people in the storyline. Sounds great.
Ugh God.

First the VII compilation lasts another 10 years.

Now the XIII thing lasts 10 years...

So Square, when will we see XIV?

I'm not so sure if I'm board for the same game being expanding over 10 years, no matter how good it is.

Rofl. Just because they're making more games for FFXIII, doesn't mean they can't continue onwards to FFXIV. Come on guys. Think. It's not impossible. They can make 3 FFXIII games, make FFXIV, then continue to make FFXIII games. Oh snap! That's such an abstract idea, I don't think it's possible!
That could work. It would definitely bring them more money.
The problem I have with this is that they are claiming the game will be as good, if not surpassing the greatness of 7.

Right there is their fatal mistake, in the field of movies, art, games, music, etc. To say your next production in a series is going to better then the last powerhouse in the franchise, then it's setting a bar of expectation that will surely not be met. Each FF is good in it's own right (except for X-2, that one should be burned and forgotten about) and to say that this next installment is going to captivate us just as 7 did is currently tough to swallow. Yes I'm sure it will be good, but the characters in X and XII appear to be recycled designs from earlier releases. As of now Square better get their trampoline out because they've just created a flaming hoople they have to jump over and through if they really plan on satisfying the FF fanbase just as they are claiming. So lets kick back and see what happens.
nicely said pizzaturdell, Square you better not fail me now ! ! ! ! !
*shakes fist*
There is no possibly way any new FF game could surpass that of FF7, simply because FF7 brought the series into the Next Gen arena. It was the first, and a masterpiece.
