The RPG making, Japanese company, and Xenosaga developer Monolith Soft, was recently bought out by Nintendo. This is from Joystiq:

Japanese development studio Monolith Soft has been purchased by Nintendo from Namco Bandai, according to a press release (PDF file) from credible Japanese news source Nikkei translated by gaming site The Platformers.

Our team of translators have discerned from the release that Nintendo now owns 80% of the company's stock, while Namco Bandai still retain 16% of their original 96% holdings in the developer, whose total worth is approximately 75 million yen.

The studio, formed in 1999 by former Square employee Hirohide Sugiura, is responsible for the Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos series. The company is also reportedly developing Disaster: Day of Crisis, a Wii title that hasn't been seen since its appearance at E3 2006.

We've contacted Nintendo further details. For the console maker, this gives them an experienced second party RPG developer. We'll keep you updated as this story progresses.

So this may mean that Nintendo ether really like what they've seen of Disaster: Day of Crisis so far, or plan to bring more RPGs to Wii. This purchase now makes Monolith a second party Nintendo developer. Not entirely owned by Nintendo, however they will still be limited to developing for Nintendo's consoles and handhelds.

This is good news. Anytime Nintendo aquires developers or takes them under their wing, it suggests good things to come from the future (Rare, Silicon Knights, and Retro).

I'm excited even though I don't like RPG's and it's likely they'll be on the way. An rpg with motion controls might be pretty sweet though.

although, i'd prefer no more Baten Kaitos games be made. i so hope they release a compilation of Xenosaga games on the Wii along with new additions though. i've always been interested in the games but never got to play them. god i hope this is my chance

sweet. disaster has had a few things on it since e3 like a couple screenshots and stuff, but so far it's still one of my 5 (unless smg comes out '08, then it's only 4) must have wii games for this year because what has been seen is really pretty.

I bought Xenosaga brand new for the PS2 and played it for 20min and never picked it up again. Not my style, and i really hope Nintendo doesn't get bogged down in that franchise.

The game doesn't necessarily have to be of that series. It would be a good bet that at least one of them were though. I'm an RPG lover and I don't think you can have too many. There are not so many on the Wii now and I'd love to see one. This looks like a good move by Nintendo. I'll be keeping my eyes on this to see what happens.

Baten Kaitos, and Xenosaga were VERY good RPG's. Xenosaga 2? Eh, not so much but Monolith is great, and I'm glad Nintendo bought them. =)

That's awesome news, good find luben. there is nothing wrong with adding more RPGs franchises to Nintendo's library.

I played some Xenosaga for the PS2, it was good, but I didn't like the characters.

I've heard Xenosaga was a good series. I wonder if they'll bring it over to Nintendo now?

Luxray FTW. But they probaly will bring the Xenosaga games to Wii now. Hopefully not ports of the PS2 versions.
