Star Fox 2 never saw the light of day but was originally scheduled to be released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It almost reached completion and was said to be about eighty percent complete before it was canceled. The game was going to introduce new ships and new members as well and was also going to use a different control scheme and style of play. The path you followed wasn't going to be linear as in the previous game and you would control two ships. I could go on and on about what it would have had if it were released but we know that it wasn't. After some recent comments by Miyamoto we just may get the chance to see how this game is after all. In a speech Miyamoto said that there was "potential of reincarnating canceled projects or projects that were put on hold in the past. One such example was Star Fox 2, a game that was canceled for the SNES during a time when the Nintendo 64 had made its debut. Nintendo is considering all possibilities of bringing such games back to life including porting these games over to the DS."
Will we finally get to play the missing Star Fox game that many of us have wanted to play? Will this give us the chance to write over the bad memory of the other Star Fox game that followed instead? Hopefully we will know more about this and I really hope that this does come true.
Nintendo considering reincarnating canceled Projects, Star Fox 2 - Codename Revolution
Sounds promising.
Starfox and Lylat Wars (aka Starfox 64 to Americans) have been the only two good Starfox games.
I still have my original copy of StarFox 64.
i'm a fan of Star Fox and all, but why not just turn it into a VC games?
idk if many will pay $35 for a once cancelled SNES game.
Sounds promising but I wonder how long it would take before it came out...but I agree with brawler that they should just turn it into a VC game
yea it just makes more sense that way.
but other than that i'm exciting to play this game. since it has already been in development, will we see it soon, or will they add some features to it, like wi-fi for example.
Yeah, I actually posted a reply similar to that but when I hit post reply a couple of days ago the site had gone down. I think people would buy it like crazy on the VC especially if it were only available on the VC.
unfortunately, i don't see a VC release with the typical $8 price tag on it. if Nintendo has to put in money to basically develope the game, they need money for that time and effort put in. every other VC title has already made money. the price for download is unnecessary, but this hasn't made any money yet
i see a DS release more likely, which i'm fine with. if the controls are as tight as the 1st StarFox and bonuses such as Wi-Fi, sharper graphics, bonus vehicles and characters are added, i see it worth $30 on the DS
you have a point there, about how much they put into it.
That's true. Well if they completely overhauled it with better graphics and everything then it might be worth the price. There are many games out there right now that I feel aren't worth it and this game should at least be given a chance.
i remember playing a Rom with the beta of SF2 a while back.
If everything is how i remember it, the arenas are opened up in a box much like the free mode in 64.
Also, you could change the mode on your Arwing, turning it into an AT-ST hybrid.
it was kinda fun, however and might be a good DS addition
It would work well on DS, its either DS or VC for sure.
Here's to hoping it will make the journey.
Not gonna happen.
Director of the project said it's not being revived for some reason. No VC, no DS...
You'll have to find an English subbed ROM of it (it was never officially done in English) and play it like that. Pretty much like SF64 and SF:Command
Yeah, I can't see this coming out. Most of the elements have been recycled in some way in other Star Fox sequels, and it will no longer fit into the Star Fox continuity.
Not Going To Happen
The reason given before was:
The game was never released due to the impending release of the Nintendo 64 and the desire to use the most advanced systems available for the game
That will most likely still stand as they will focus of future projects rather then bringing back older ones.
Also, to clear things up:
StarFox 2 was fully completed. I was the lead programmer and whilst Giles made Stunt Race FX, myself and the rest of the original Starfox team (ie. Nintendo's artists and designers) expanded Starfox into a full 3D shooting game. The reason for non-release was the then impending Nintendo 64 which of course was intended to be released a lot sooner than it actually was. Miyamoto-san decided he wanted to have a clean break between 3D games on the SNES and 3D games on the new superior 64 bit system. In retrospect, he could have released Star Fox 2 and there would have been over a year and a half before the N64 came out. But hindsight is always 20/20.
It has been said before that the original japenese version was pretty much complete apart from it still had some bug editing tools to run and remove and such.
Completely off the subject of Starfox, but in respect to the game which IMO inspired the game...I really miss Captain Skyhawk...I needs to find me that NES cart sometime one eBay when the funds are sufficient.
completely back on topic
if the game is done, Nintendo has little reason to not patch it up a bit and sell it on VC, or even for the DS. VC is more likely tho. hell, for $8, i'd buy the sequel to one of the best shooters of the day
once again, another video game company is sitting on a pot of gold and doesn't even realize it
