Go!Cam will allow for up to two and half hours video recording time and has the ability to take and store over 40,000 photos using a 4GB memory stick, converting the PSP into a portable, functional camera.

Go!Cam will ship with a built-in microphone to ensure continuous audio, and the direction of the camera lens can be changed vertically by 180 degrees.

The product will be bundled with Go!Edit, an editing software package that allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips.

"Go!Cam is fantastic news for all those PSP owners looking for something new, fun and creative,” said Stephane Hareau, PSP marketing manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

“With Summer around the corner and the ability to turn your PSP into a mini camcorder and capture all the best moments in your life, this is yet another reason to get a PSP and to take advantage of truly portable entertainment. It demonstrates yet again the potential, versatility and evolving nature of PSP,” he added.

Go!Cam requires PSP firmware upgrade to version 2.80 onwards.

The news follows the announcement last week of the PlayStation Eye camera accessory for the PS3.

I don't know, but it doesn't really sound like such a great idea to me. I have yet to see a camera peripheral become a true success on any system.
agreed, this camera seems like more of a gimmick, but the new Playstation Eye should be the real deal and a must have.
More INFO

The Go Cam will function both as a still picture camera and a digital camcorder, with a built-in microphone. It will mount on top of the PSP and can turn 180 degrees.

Sony added digital camera functionality for the PSP in a system update months ago. The Go Cam will be the first device that can actually make use of the new menu button.

In addition, the camera will include a UMD disc of "Go Edit", a video/photo editing application for the PSP. The retail price is set at EUR 50, roughly $70. It's set to go on sale in Europe on May 16, with a U.S. debut expected in the months to come.

Oh yeah, Sony. REAL inventive and innovative. ?_?

Also exactly what the consumer wants. ?_??_?
Again, like I've mentioned before, I think this item is too expensive and not necessary for a portable...I think back to the gameboy camera (which I owned), but be watching for the Playstation Eye...that thing is gonna rock.
Just curious but have they stated how many megapixels the camera will be? I'm guessing 1.3 or maybe, and that's a big maybe 2.
I'm guessing 1.3mp, but not sure. I found info on another cam/gps unit in Japan...

More PSP camera and GPS details released

Recently, pictures of Sony’s planned camera and GPS add-ons flooded gaming sites all over the web. Sony has announced the Japanese release date and price of both.

The 1.3 mega pixel camera will be capable of taking pictures at either 480×272 or 640×480 resolution, and shooting 30 fps video 15 seconds at a time. The camera will set us back roughly $43 USD including a storage case.

The GPS will also sit on top of your PSP, connected to the USB port. The GPS will refresh every second and will need separately sold map packs to run. The GPS receiver will cost approximately $52 USD.

Both of these new items will be released in Japan in December 7th. Unfortunately, Sony has not announced any North American or European release dates. Hit the jump for a picture of the camera.
