Rockstar: GTAIV limited by 360
The Xbox 360's lack of a guaranteed harddrive is creating limitations for the Rockstar team developing Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360, Rockstar Veep Dan Houser said in a recent interview with Official Playstation Magazine.
In the interview Houser was asked:
"On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" To which he replied, "Yep."
He continued, "To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet." The difficulties aren't limited to working on Microsoft's box, as Houser explains that "both have enormous challenges" and that "both have their own particular pleasures and pains".

* I guess this is good news for those who have a PS3...
I really can't believe no one has jumped on this yet. I mean this is gonna be a major game and yet the studio making it says that there's real limitation with the Xbox 360 because not all of them have Hard Drives.
Well there isn't much to discuss. The 360 is limiting the game and all people can say is "Aww, man." there just isn't much to say about it.
Do you think there'd be a chance that Rockstar would basically say...In order to play the game you must have a HD...that way the gamer can get the best possibly experience?
That would be pretty lame, but it's a possibility. Personally, I wouldn't mind because I have a HD and I don't want my game to be any worse than the PS3 version, but since I don't run anything, I don't have much of a say. It seems that all of the developers are making games off of the Core version so that no one is left out, but I'd like to see a Premium or even Elite game in the future, just so I can see possibilities.
Wasn't Final Fantasy 11 for the PS2 hard drive only? The cool thing is that for someone who has a core system, they could buy the HD and add it on, if they really wanted a more complete game, but I think your right, it will be built, at least for the 360 around the core system.
Thats because FF-XI *needed* the harddrive.
With GTAIV they could always make it for the 360 core system.
Also, doesn't the article say that both platforms are limiting production of GTAIV?

They should. Honestly, most people buy the one with the hard drive anyway. M$ should just drop the core SKU, honestly. It hurts their 3rd party support. Anyway, either way, I don't think that the game will suffer because of it. Reportedly, all the screens and game-play that has been shown so far was from the 360 version of the game. So it's a good sign for 360 fans.
On another subject, if Sony keeps loosing big exclusive titles like these (GTAIV, FFXIII), they're going to suffer.

I can only comment on what the article says. You can read into it as much or little as you like, but the publisher specifically said they're limited with this game because not all 360's have a HD.
and that the 360 has a crappy dvd drive instead of a better hd-dvd/ blu-ray drive limiting the games content on the 360 to just 8.5gigs. whereas the ps3's blu-ray discs have 50gigs of storage.
I think the big question is this: Should a game developer, create a game for the absolute base system out there or should they do the same as PCs where as you do what you need that basically say...this is what you'll need?
at this point i don't see why they don't just scrap the whole project and start again on the wii. then they wouldn't have problems like this.
GTA4 is gonna be a huge game. I don't think they can't "scrap" it, because they have so much cash already into it.
