Here is where you can discuss about your DS mods.
This is a mod forum! Not just a Wii Mod forum >.<

Problems, cool programs you may have written just for it (For those programmers out there), where and how much you bought it for, and anything else DS Mod related.

Remember, no talk about ROMS. Those are illegal, however, hombrewed games are allowed, we'd like to see what you have ^_^

I want to open this up with 2 questions.

1. Which do you prefer/think is better. R4 or M3?

2. As I own a M3, and am having several problems, I would like to ask if anyone has had these issues. Freezing, and save problems, etc.
My Pokemon Diamond back-up won't save so I havent been able to play that. I think its either the file, or because I forgot to format the SD.

I'm pretty sure the freezing is cause by the unformatted SD, but I haven't been able to try formating it. For fear os corrupting the SD.
(Kindrik has warned me that when using the USB connector that comes with the Mod corrupts the data, and I don't feel like proving him wrong >.>

Let the discussions begin!
Kindrik, if you have your USB settings to not move files on the fly it will corrupt the data because it hasn't actually moved all of it at the time you disconnect it. Try it again with the supplied cable and when you are done double click the hardware icon it puts in your task tray and hit 'remove hardware'. Let it do its thang then see if the data is corrupt.

Charmander for your M3 what version BIOS do you have on it currently and which game client are you using? Also which brand SD card do you have (it matters for pokemon pearl/diamond saves).
I yes, I did forget to mention the SD card didn't I? That's probably it. Although I haven't tested yet.

I just formatted my SD, and I have to say. It did nothing. Games still freeze, Pokemon Pearl seems to save properly, but I haven't tried Diamond (Pearl always worked properly btw)
I think I'll use this SD for music while I buy a second for games.

The current SD is a Kingston 1GB, it was refurbished, so maybe something was wrong with it to begin with.

And how do I check the BIOS?
Is FAT32 it?
And how do I check the Client?

I just got the mod a few weeks ago, so I know very little about it.
Judging by the fact that Pearl saves, I'm gonna guess the file is bad.
Can trimming affect the game? I'm pretty sure it shouldn't.
I dont have a clue what your talking about. Whats R3 and m4?
Trimming sounds like it might affect the game because your obviously modifiying the game somehow to make it smaller.
R4 and M3 are DS software mods.
They are DS cartridge adapters that allow you to connect a mini SD card to your DS. Allowing you to watch movies, listen to music, and play homebrew and back-up games.

Trimming gets rid of the blank files in a DS game. So it shouldn't do anything.
Why would there be "blanks" in a DS game, seems like maybe that "blank" was being read by the game and it isn't there anymore so the game just freezes up.
I've had zero problems with freezing on my R4, though I haven't used it a whole lot. Anyone know any good homebrew games?

I tried every which way I could. Even changing my USB settings but it still kept corrupting. I took a look online and found that other people were having the same problems I was having. Apparantly some of the USB adapters the M3 company sent out with their mods were defective. It's all the same to me though because the SD card adapter I got with my microSD works perfectly fine.

Every game's got a little blank space (from what I've heard). So you'll find most roms will happen to be certain sizes. Like 120MB, 64MB,32MB, or something. But after trimming each game will change depending on how much was really there. So one game at 32MB might go to 15.4MB while another will only drop to 31.5MB.
I havn't had any trouble trimming my games and they all play just like they would off their original cards.

I tried looking around but couldn't really find much that interested me. Your best bet may just be to try Google and see what you can find.

Actually trimming can affect some games ability to play/boot/save.

Charmander it's very important to have the latest BIOS flashed to your M3 and that you are using the latest client to decrypt your (totally legal, self made) backup rom. If you don't know which version you have then go to the m3adapter website and download the newest files anyway, it wont hurt to reflash the M3 or reinstall the program on your PC.

For Kingstons you need firmware 32b and software version 32 with the ONLY settings checked as: 1x DMA and Force R/W

No trimming, no soft reset. That's the only way the two pokemons work 100% with saving for right now.

Do people really need to trim files?  1GB MicroSD's are so cheap right now, and can hold quite a few games (and 2GB are coming down in price).  How many do you really need to have on one stick at a time?

I realise that there's really no need for me to trim but I'm a minimalist of sorts so I do it anyways.
Actually trimming your roms will let you squeeze that extra game on there sometimes Smile I don't like taking games off to put another on cause I'm always like "Hmm well I could be out somewhere and want to play it..." even thought I probably never will... but yeah.

I'm the same way. I think I only have a little over 2MB of space left on my card. But at the same time, there are 8 I havn't played yet and that have no save files. So once I get around to playing them there will be < 1 MB of free space on my 1GB microSD.

So disabaling Soft Reset makes games run better?
I never use it... So I might as well :p

Better make an untrimmed version of pokemans. I'm behind...
I find the soft reset handy, but not at all essential since you're only taking about 6 seconds longer in turning your DS off and on again as opposed to the soft reset.
In the middle of a game of Elite Beat Agents I was in the middle of a cutscene and wasnt able to skip it, and as a force of habit I just kept pressing buttons. I wound up accidentally reseting and had to start the song over again. Toungue
One thing I read was if you are using a Slot-1 device (R4 or M3 Simply), trimming will negatively affect it since the NDS file is usually an exact image of what is on an actual DS cartridge.

I know that I trimmed some games when I first got the M3 then reloaded them without trimming and the games that would freeze (Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin) don't anymore.

Anyone get that new CycloDS from teamcyclops?

Some games will, some won't. I remember a list online that said things like either, "works fine with or without trimming", "works when not trimmed", "doesn't work at all", etc.

i've got the R4 too with a 2GB mini SD.

here's a pic of it with my custom skin:

i've had it for about 2 months and i've never had issues with it. everything is basically drag and drop. havent tried playing movies/videos on it. not really interested in that. i only got the R4 because it was the easiest way to play DS roms.
Neat. I've thought of making my own skin too, but don't have the will power or patience to make a nice one.
