your reasoning is flawed. defense deoxys has a higher base defense. the only way it'd be less is due to levels and hindering natures.
the battle is circumstantial. the person may have ran out of the move, and who were you battling.
You think I remember the exact Pokemon I was battling when my lvl 100 Doexys defense, got mass murdered? No. I dont.
