The June issue of Game Informer magazine is where one can read about Square-Enix’s new IP (not a milking of an existing Final Fantasy property) The Last Remnant. The latest Square-Enix RPG will be a single player RPG directed by Hiroshi Takai, better known for his role as game planner in The Bouncer. The Last Remnant will feature two characters who will appeal to each of the game’s audience; Rush (traditional Square-Enix hero) who will appeal to the Japanese gaming audience, and The Conqueror (dark/anti-hero) will appeal to the Western gaming audience. The best part of this new IP? It’ll make use of the Unreal Engine 3 which Square-Enix licensed a while back.
It’s nice to see Square-Enix trying something new for current generation consoles that isn’t necessarily a Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest milk fest (not to say milking isn’t bad…at least when it’s done right). The game is more than likely a multiplatform game (re: Playstation 3 and Xbox 360) which is a first for Square-Enix. For those who were skeptical of Square-Enix and doubted they could create a new IP that didn’t involve milking an existing franchise, you can rest easy knowing your skepticism is now a bit underwhelmed. If you have the latest issue of Game Informer, you can read more about The Last Remnant and how it’ll be a turn-based RPG with QTE gameplay and even see the images of the game which, for lack of a better term, are very, very impressive. Don’t know what QTE means?
Think Legend of Dragoon, or even Paper Mario, gameplay. Past the break is information regarding the game from Game Informer magazine for those of you who don’t have a subscription to the magazine.
