Miyamoto Could Have Made Halo
He just didn't feel like it.

US, May 7, 2007 - Shigeru Miyamoto, the famed Nintendo game designer who was recently picked as one of Time's 100 most-influential people, says he could have made Halo, had he wanted to. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miyamoto reveals that he is not interested in making the games people want -- he's trying to make the games people don't even know they want yet.

"I could make Halo," Miyamoto says. "It's not that I couldn't design that game. It's just that I choose not to. One thing about my game design is that I never try to look for what people want and then try to make that game design. I always try to create new experiences that are fun to play."

The designer also shares his unique approach to market research. Instead of focus groups and demographic analysis, he watches the expression on a gamer's face while his game is being played. "When I show a game to people I don't ask their opinion or give them a survey. I just watch their eyes and their face while they play. Do they smile? Do they look frustrated? So I guess I do test my games -- but it isn't very scientific."

Sometimes his sense of what gamers want to play isn't 100% accurate, as the disappointing sales of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in Japan show. Miyamoto believes the audience for an epic, hardcore adventure game is shrinking, which could mean we can expect more casual games from Nintendo. The designer says Twilight Princess is selling "okay" in the U.S.

<3 for Miyamoto.

Nice. Rep for Miyamoto :p

That is the reason I like Nintendo. Tose out there games. The unexpected. The fun. Miyamoto is a genius.
This is the reason I don't pick favorites.
DAMN its true Char, Miyamoto is a true genius!!!
Very strange claim by Miyamoto. I thought him saying that Twilight Princess is selling "okay" was an understatement. I think more than half of everyone who owns a Wii also owns TP. That's practically unheard of...How is the audience for "epic, hardcore" adventures shrinking when the top-selling game for the Wii is exactly that? I think Nintendo is trying to make up excuses to stop making the big games like Zelda and Metroid and continue to usher in more Wario Wares and Brain Ages and Mario Partys and crap. Sad...
because of him i want to work with computers and or video games. im not joking. he is very influential
Or he's just making us expect less, thus lowering the expectations.
So when we get the game, we are more happy about it then when its hyped up.
Or I'm just making B.S. to make it sound like a crude marketing ploy.

I think he's just disappointed about TP, it could have been a lot better. Miyamoto has been known to be a perfectionist.
That's why I love Miyamoto. He makes great games, and they are so unexpected. Where would we be if he never made Zelda or Mario?

We <3 Mario!
I saw this comment but didn't know what to think of it. I'm sure he could have made a game like Halo as he is very creative. Now if he knew just how big Halo would be and had that idea and didn't do it because he didn't feel like it then that's just ...
That's just... Miyamoto.

LMX, are you sure your real name is not Matt Parkman? Were you ever a police officer? Where's the Haitian when I need him!

Ugh, Halo's not that great. Not because it's Xbox or not nintendo, it's just a mediocre fps. I'm not sure why it caught on so well, although the multiplayer is set up pretty well, as is the online. So there be my answer.
First, Miyamoto, you gotta love him. Smile

Second, Halo was a great fps and it is the measuring stick that all fps games are held up to. It was the same with Goldeneye before it. They both set a standard of a fun and well rounded game. Sure the single player mode is a little repetitve at times but so was goldeneye. What's more fun than sitting down with your friends and playing Halo split screen. The game practically made Xbox and Microsoft a viable console manufacturer.

Any way enough ranting.
i just saw this on IGN, and i couldnt believe it. what if he did make Halo and it was on Nintendo consoles. what would XBOX/Microsoft have?

Nintendo would never forget the hard core gamers. I think he was talking about Japan and how the Wii is selling less titles like Zelda and more games like WarioWare and Brain Age...

This is why Miyamoto should be on the cover of TIME 100.
he will in time.
