Details

Quote:
-Pac'n Roll Remix: Pac-Man will roll his way to victory instead of chomping his way through. Players navigate Pac-Man by rolling him through worlds where he will face deadly obstacles, roll-up classic pac pellets and use awesome power-ups.

- Galaga Remix: With Galaga invaders arriving from the far reaches of space, players must try to shoot down the invading forces and save Pac-Man from ultimate destruction. With up to four-players able to challenge the oncoming invaders, and scores being tallied for each player, wiping out an alien species has never been so much fun.

- Pac-Motos Remix: The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to knocking your opponents off a series of unique and colorful stages all while using the Wii controller to move, dash and power-up your Pac-Man. Players engage in a small arena where the goal is to knock opponents off while grabbing power-ups and navigating through challenging environments.

- Rally-X Remix: With up to four players capable of taking the screen at once, this classic Namco title is brought new life with slick graphics, power-ups and a new intuitive control scheme using the Wii remote to steer.

-Gator PanicĀ® Remix: Gators pose a serious problem and Pac-Man is here to solve it. Players use Pac-Man to whack at emerging gators that appear on screen. The player with the most gator whacks at the end of a match wins.

Ign Go Hands On!

Ign were lucky,or not so lucky, to go hands on with Namco Museum Remix.

Though Namco Museum Remix promises more than a dozen classic arcade games and a handful of classic, Wii-specific Namco arcade remakes when the game ships later this year, the version that Namco Bandai had on display at its pre-E3 event earlier this week only had two functional, playable games to test. Clearly the game has a long ways to go.

In the demo version of Namco Museum Remix, we could play an early version of the Galaga remake, as well as tool around a few levels of Rally-X. Both 3D designed games featured Namco Bandai's recognizable Pac-Man character, when the original 80s designs didn't need to call upon the round dot-muncher to help out.

In Galaga, for whatever reason Pac-Man's rolling around in space through a rollercoaster network of tubes and platforms. Players don't have control over the yellow dude -- he's just trying to get to the end of the level. Instead, players have to protect him as he's rolling around, because Galaga bugs don't want him to succeed. Any chance they'll get to shoot at Pac-Man as he progresses through those twisting and turning gutters they will. Players simply have one option: aim and shoot. Using the Wii Remote's pointing function, players simply blast away using the on-screen crosshairs and the A button. Zap away at the aliens before they have time to line up for a shot at Pac-Man.

Even though Galaga was playable, it felt entirely hollow in concept. We're hoping it was just early, because there was nothing fun about this remake: simply shoot-shoot-shoot-shoot-shoot at the swarming enemies with absolutely no technique. There was no reward for shooting an entire swarm before they scrolled off-screen, and no Galaga-esque element of sacrificing a life for double shots. If an alien bug managed to get a shot off before you shot him, you couldn't protect Pac-Man from getting hit. We can see a bit of influence from Namco's old railshooter Starblade in this remake, but it wasn't nearly as fun. This was a very "meh" update.

Rally-X was a little better, simply because this one felt like the complete one of the two. Like in the original arcade game, players maneuver their buggy through mazes, avoiding computer-controlled cars by blasting them with smoke screens. In this update, the game played at a forced angled overhead perspective in basic-but-smooth 3D with Pac-Man behind the wheel. Each level had its own criteria, revolving around the concept of collecting flags. In one level, you simply drove over any one you saw. In another, you had to collect them in numerical order. In another challenge, you had to defeat enemy cars with the smokescreen to force them to drop a flag, then pick it up before they could.

This game didn't use any Wii-centric controls. It was simply move with the analog stick of the Nunchuk and use the A and B buttons on the remote for smoke screen and an extra boost of speed. We're guessing that the game could be played without the Nunchuk since controls were simply up, down, left, and right...just like the original arcade game. The final version will have multiplayer, but since the demo locked out specific modes, we couldn't try it out.

There's far more to Namco Museum Remix that we didn't get to play. The final game will have emulated versions of classic arcade games like Galaxian, Dig Dug, Mappy, Xevious, Gaplus, Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Mania and Cute Q, as well as a port of the DS sleeper Pac 'n Roll, and Wii remakes of Gator Panic and Motos. Watch for a release this Fall, as well as updated hands-on prior to its shipdate.

This type of game really doesn't interest me. How about you?

I always like playing Namco Museum on my N64. Those classic games were always fun. So I'll definitely try this game. A rent at least. I don't expect this to be full price either though.
Merging.
