Full Version: Rumor: Wii Graphics on par with 360?

MozLaPunk.net is reporting that a reputable insider has claimed that Nintendo's biggest secret may not yet be revealed.

According to these sources, the graphical capability of the Wii is actually on par or slightly better than the Xbox 360. It is said that development kits that are currently in the hands of third party developers are Gamecube/Wii hybrids that do not show the full graphical potential of the actual Wii. The Wii may even have the ability to connect to a computer monitor, which was emphasized as significant. Could this mean a DVI/HDMI connection, or some other feature not yet announced?

Based on Nintendo's past abilities to pull great graphics from limited hardware, there might be truth in this. However, with the buzz the Wii is creating, there will certainly be false speculation circulating, so please do not get your hopes up! We will have the latest updates as soon as they are available.

Thanks Patton91!
Grahpics can't be as good as 360 because they're not HD. Every texture on a Wii will have a smaller resolution than even the smallest resolution texture on a 360. Not a bias as I don't like the 360 too much, it's just fact. And there will be no HDMI, because again, Wii isn't HD. Although there is a chance it'll have a DVI, I doubt it because that'd be a waste of a component that nearly no one would use because it barely allows crisper (not better) graphics.
hrmmm

From what I understand, there are different flavors of DVI, but isn't DVI an uncompressed method of video transfer. I know you can get a DVI-HDMI converter cable, and until HDMI was named the standard, some HDTVs and upconvert DVD players would come in DVI instead of HDMI.

Or perhaps they were just comparing 480p against each other?

doubt it. werent the hardware specs released already? i think i read that they were on par with the xbox, not the 360.
No specs have been released, as Nintendo is always tight lipped about stuff like, but Nintendo told third party developers that it would be slightly better than the orignal Xbox (which again, they do not have the full development kits), so that may be where you read it.
so if it's on par with the 360 why do the games look like ass?

Nintendo, which is trying to regain videogame market share from Microsoft and Sony, will likely sell its new Wii console for much less than its competitors' console prices. Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post predicted Thursday that the new machine, which will be released this fall, will sell for $200, a move that could prompt software publishers to create more titles for the gaming system.

...

Post said the Nintendo machine, which features a wireless controller that responds to players' body movements, "will appeal to a broad demographic of both hard-core and casual gamers." The Wii, which has less processing power than Sony's and Microsoft's offerings, may be easier to create new software for, and Post thinks third-party game publishers "are responding favorably to the lower-cost publishing environment for the Wii."

Its possible the graphics capabilities are far better then expected since its much easier to squeeze unfathomable power and graphical capabilities out of a console. I doubt the Wii will be as graphically capable as first generation 360 games but the ass you see right now will most definately be fine tuned when a better SDK is released.

Even Nintendo has said that it's processing power will not be equal, but the rumor is that Nintendo will renouce that statement, or, in spite of the lack of processing power, create graphics on par with it, as Nintendo has generally been able to squeeze better graphics out of less hardware in the past.

Yes, it does seem unlikely, which is why it is a rumor.

Oh infy <3

I think Madden 07 looked great. It def, looked on par to 360.
well i dont think that it would look as good as the 360 from normal publishers but from nintendo and capcom eg. Resident Evil 4 but that means that even thought the numbers say less it could probaly do more

I heard that nintendo is going to renounce the mario brother and replace them with the boondock saints. Once again only a rumor but it could happen. (enter sarchasm here). Smile

I'd love to see the Wii be on par with the Xbox 360, but that's not really why I'd buy it. I like fun games...Guitar Hero, Super Monkey Ball, Super Smash Brothers. The other systems can keep their games which have 4 minute intros and 2 minute load screens. Give me something fun, and keep the HD. I don't even own an HD tv so I can't complain.
Wii has been keeping us guessing, and I would like to see this, but it probably won't happen Sad.
I don't totally think its impossible, but I believe it's unlikely.
The Wii isn't about graphics, it's about playability and fun factor.
