I have an Intel Pentium D Dual-Core clocked at 3.2GHz but I want to know if a "core" is a physical component of the cpu or just a software piece. I'm guessing hardware...... Big Grin lol

2nd question:
Has anyone put the CELL into a PC and tried it out?
Cores are practically a seccond CPU on the chip.
Hyperthreading is when there is a sort of fake second core.

The best multi core processors atm are the Intel Core 2 processors

And no, It's not possible, firstly, the architechures are completely different and secondly you'd have to make a custom motherboard because there is no way you could make it fit into a standard Intel or AMD socket.
damn

i bet someone will try
lol not likely, you'd require knowledge of what each individual pin on the chip does and then the knowledge to make a motherboard.

it'd be much easier to put linux on a PS3 (but you'd still need to recode a lot of the kernal)
There are Pentium Dual-Core/Intel Dual-Core (T2050, T2080, etc), Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo/Quad (in the order of capabilities). They are separated by things like architecture, cache, etc.

AMD has Athlon 64 x2 to compete with it. They are cheaper but not as capable in most people's opinion, at least when comparing by class of processor and not by price/performance ratio. In other words, Intel mid range processors are better than mid range AMD processors, but mid range AMD processors may be more capable than lower end Intel processors, despite being similar in price range.

One main difference is that Intel uses one large cache that is shared by both cores (example, 2mb shared between two cores), while AMD's cores each have a dedicated, smaller cache (example, 512k for each core). Intel's method is thought to be more efficient as one core can use virtually all of the cache when the other does not need it.

woot.

still no way you'd get it working in a pc. Its like taking the brain from a pig and putting it in a human, then expecting to find out what the pig's been thinking.
