Now this is more like it. Sure, we've seen the prices of HD DVD players slowly but surely sinking over time, and while there's been more than a few inconvenient rebate offers of late, it looks like a new precedent has been set. Crutchfield is now offering up Toshiba's HD-A2 HD DVD player for a mere $199 after a $100 instant rebate, but we wouldn't count on this thing showing up anytime soon. According to the site, not only is inventory sitting at zero, but it also admits that the ship date is unfortunately "uncertain." Still, $199 for a second-generation HD DVD player ain't too shabby (have you seen one for less?), so be sure to check out the previous impressions before grabbing your place in the ever-growing line of customers trying to take advantage.

good find. I'd love to buy one of these, because I'm a movie freak, but I honestly can't right now. If Blu Ray died tomorrow then I probably would, but right now the future of all that is unclear.

Also, I was surprised when I went to Walmart yesterday and saw the price of HD DVD movies seem to have gone up in price. I use to see them for $22.00, but Walmart had many that were $27.00 and up.
im starting to come around on next gen DVD...I love movies and i dont care who wins but the extras are very cool on some of these next gen titles

i also really like the idea of getting an entire season of my favorite show on a disc or two (Lost seasons are usually 7 or 8 DVDs) therby (hopefully) saving me some cash...if that makes sense
I got stung back in the day when Circuit City was pushing Divx. Actually the sales person lied to be about one of the features so on day 28 I took the player back and got a Sony 5-disc DVD player (remember this was years ago). So I'm really cautious about putting my neck out their and buying either the HD DVD or Blu Ray, because I don't wanna be sitting with a dud system that won't have movies.

I figure when 2009 comes around and everyone goes to digital tv. Many of our favorite shows will be pushed in HD, if they aren't already now, so we'll still see quite a few Blu Ray or HD DVD disc. You take BBC's version of Planet Earth. I have it on standard DVD and it's 5 disc. The HD DVD version of it is 4 disc, and that's without any HD extras or supplements.
oh, not a great space savings there, hmmm,
It switched to ship date uncertain only after tons and tons of orders. At first it was instock (for a very short time), and then the ship date kept going up until finally "uncertain".

I had this thing in my cart yesterday, but finally held off as I really don't "need" it right now (but I really really want it!)

I'm gonna wait until at least Dec 07 or Jan 08 to decide which way I'm gonna go for the next gen of DVDs.

7 or 8 DVDs you say? Well, I can put the whole season on 2 DVDs. Wait, not saying that I did or would...just that I could.....

hopefully by dec 07/jan 08 one of the formats will be dead so we won't have to play a game of Russian roulette.
yep, because it only took 7 or 8 years to settle vhs vs betamax. now there is also the possibility of dual format players going mainstream soon (ie dvd-r and dvd+r war outcome).

if it has to go one way or the other, hd dvd will pull it out just because of backwards capability, and more importantly, the sub $200 prices that will be everywhere this holiday season. Once it's that low on store shelves, it's mainstream, and blu ray camp will lose every advantage the ps3 gave them.
