“I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool. I’m not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007. The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more and more about the PlayStation 3.”

“But how much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or 5 years from now, or 10 years from now? How can they design products that aren’t too derivative of what’s already out there? We know the PS3 pool is pretty deep. There’s a lot to exploit there.”

If anything Wii's pool is deeper! Theres just so many possibilities with Wii. They would'nt all be used in two years! Sega = Graphics whores!

*ends rant*

Sega should hold some focus groups with 11 to 40-year-old boys in order to learn the subtle value of "wrist motion" and how it is continually fun over and over and over again.

Smile
^ Lmao! But realy...they cant just narrow it all down to wrist motion. Its o much more than that.
Take the DS as an example. People thought 'PSP's graphics will own the DS! Stupid touch screen!'

And yet here it is, DS still blowing PSP out of the water.

Developers will get better at making PS3 games but they'll also get better at Wii games as well. There's just so much more you can do with the Wii-mote than with a conventional controller.
Sorry, any system that gets the upper hand in the first couple of years will continue to dominate after that (and usually by a greater margin, as developers flock to the largest market, causing the market to flock to that system, and so on). Every generation thus far has shown that.
*gathers courage*

the guy has a point. many of the wii games have the centered focal point of implementing motion sensing controls, sometimes to the point where its abused. take Sonic and the Secret Rings for example. And further more SSX Blur, which is a good game but the controls make it difficult to pull out the uber tricks, which is a big part of the series.

I didn't say that I didn't agree with his points, but I do think the Wii will be the success here, even if it doesn't get that many great games. Most of these games that have been churning out are games for the Wii's typical customer, which is the average non/casual gamer.

Wii's controls are so new that many designers don't know where to start, and others are afraid to try big and fail big. On the flip side, there will be some amazing stuff to come from them, but we may have to weed through crap to get to it (which usually happens with the Playstation brand).

In two years, there will be some great must have games, and then plenty of others that are there if you want them. I honestly have over 20 Wii games, and I've played (more than 30 minutes) maybe half of them. Sure, lack of time is a big factor, but if I had really liked them, I would have made time. I could say the same thing about my 360 and DS, though, so maybe it's just me. The games I do enjoy, I play pretty often, at least for a while. Others, I play for years (SSBM and Tetris DS come to mind) as they never get old.

Sega Clarifies Wii Hype Comments

Quote:
Sega of America's VP of Marketing Scott Steinberg (right) has clarified his previous comments that he made to Reuters. Steinberg is still very much a Wii supporter and he said the responsibility of innovation on Wii is on Sega just as much as it's on anyone in the industry. More within...

In a recent interview with Reuters Sega of America's marketing vp Scott Steinberg made some very interesting comments regarding the Wii and PS3, casting some doubt on the Wii's long-term prospects.

In a new statement sent to GameDaily BIZ, however, Steinberg clarified his position, noting that Sega has and always will be behind the Wii.

Here's his new statement in full:

"SEGA has fully supported the Wii since day one and we continue to do so – it's no secret that we are close partners. Nintendo has done a masterful job of selling its vision and expanding the market. That said, it's a shared responsibility and opportunity for the whole industry to take advantage of the possibilities of the Wii. If we don't realize its true potential, we will have missed a great opportunity to expand creatively and that is what I was cautioning against in the Reuters interview. I'm not just putting the responsibility of innovation on Nintendo. It's on SEGA and all the publishers and developers as well to carry that flag.

SEGA has been behind the Wii since day one. At E3 2006, our booth was one of the only places you could play a Wii game other than at the Nintendo's. We had playable versions of Super Monkey Ball and Sonic and the Secret Secret Rings up and running. We also just announced a historic partnership with Nintendo to create Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games – a title that SEGA and Nintendo are developing together exclusively for the Wii and DS. We currently have seven titles that we've announced for the Wii such as The Golden Compass, NiGHTS and Ghost Squad, and many more in development.

The Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 all have their own unique advantages. SEGA is excited to be publishing for all three consoles."

Interesting Smile

I understand what he's saying. He's just a litte scared of the less-than-steller graphical power available on the Wii. He doesn't believe developers will continue to crank out decent games with awesome motion controls over the next few years. To be honest, he may be right for the first year or two. But after that, the Wii controls will own. Then the console war can officially begin. (Once PS3 picks itself up of course)
the hype may fade

but, it's not going to kill a console that would have gathered 15m sales by that point, though.
The probably will fade but that doesn't mean it'll hurt Wii. Wii games will start using the controls to it's potential in about a year or so.
