If you're a first timer, I'd go for Ubuntu, Madriva or SuSE

With a P3 that has 64mb of RAM?

yep, my concern is its just not enough, gonna try anyway, just out my time if it doesnt work
Mandriva will do okay in that space.

I had Madrake (the predecesor) working on 64Mb of ram on a regular Pentium PC ages ago so It should work

but yeah, ubuntu might be a push
So far on laptop, no WiFi hardware support (internal) and it can't set my resolution correctly (1280x800). I am running it from the CD.
lol

hmm,

check out the ubuntu wiki for info on if the wifi is supported, and I think the resolution is properly available on a full install

I will another day Toungue Vista will work for now. I need to get some work done.

I put linux on my PS2, my PC, my ipod mini and my ipod video. and I personally made a linux kernal for a refridgerator once, it worked a little, I never actualy got a GUI for it, but yea.

You're kidding, right?

Debian > *

I started out on Slackware. That was on a 286 with only a 5.25" floppy drive and (originally) Jiffy DOS. Throw an amber-monochrome monitor in the mix and you had a pretty sweet Linux machine. Lmao ^__^
ubuntu is based on debian.
Yeah, but Debian is still better.
heh, I dunno, I've always had driver issues with debian, because ubuntu has so much drive, basically all my hardware has complete support (even my NTFS formatted HDDs!)
So joker whats ubuntu like?
burn an ISO and try out the Live CD yourself (you don't need to install)
Just from the Live CD, it reminds me of Windows 2000 Pro in design, with different menu styles. Of course, I would have to use it for more than 5 minutes to pass judgment, but since my wireless card didn't work, there wasn't much I could do. I would gladly load it on an older computer for speedy browsing and word processing, but both my laptop and desktop are dual cores with Vista Premium and Office 2007, and they run quite well with a familiar UI, so I doubt I'd take the time to learn it right now. I'm tossing my old computers (not literally, I'll just handing them down) as I really don't need so many, but I might load it on one of them and play around with it for a while first.

Yeah, but again I've been using Linux since I was 14. I've never had a driver issue I couldn't solve (on a PC anyway), because rather than running a distro that has every driver known to man in it, I acquire the drivers/etc I need and compile my own kernel specific to my hardware every time.

ahhh, see, I never have the patience for that, because the last time I made my own kernal it would hardly boot XD

I have not put Linux on anything i own.

Same here.

I don't plan to, either.

i haven't either

Well don't be hard on yourself, it took me several tries when I first started using Linux to compile a working kernel. :XD
