cloud, you're missing the point.
It's not because it's popular.
It's because you and a lot of the active users basically post only in that thread. That isn't good for the site as it means the rest of the forum dies whilst you spend all your time in one thread. The newbies either get lost and leave because the rest of the forum is inactive, or they join in and exacerbate the issue as they end up just posting in that thread and nowhere else.

The thinking behind locking the thread is that most participants don't really post anywhere else. This causes two problems.
1. A huge unweildly thread that dominates the forum, this will natually be the first thread that a newbie would visit, because it MUST be good to have that many posts. They are then greeted with a conversation which is seemingly impossible to follow unless you have been reading/participating for a few weeks. This results in them feeling extradited and exempt from the discussions, so they leave OT and browse the rest of the forum.
2. They look around and notice there aren't an awful lot of threads with a particularly active discussion. This is because most of the forums active posters are posting in LPTPHW or similar threads. It's only members like Nomad and GFT who shy away from OT who promote active discussion in their appropriate sections. The newbies will then post in all of the active threads and leave, they may come back and notice there has been little discussion in the thread they posted in and either leave and never return or go back and try to get involved with the sect surrounding LPTPHW.
That's the way I see things. But, prove me wrong; you guys keep posting at the same volume you were (just not in LPTPHW) and spread it out over the fourm. I'll monitor the number of non-bouncing new members we get and If it's a negligable increase (or even a decrease) then I'll consider either unlocking the current thread or allowing a new one.
(and don't think that you can get away with not posting for the next couple of weeks to keep the rest of the forum looking dead, because then I'll just cancel the deal.)

If you don't want to then you don't have to. But, the thread won't come back if you don't.

Me posting isn't gonna make us get anymore traffic.
So your saying, if I don't feel like posting, LPTPHW Wont come back. How Fair! =D
If LPTPHW Is intimidatitng newbies, which I think is completely wrong, Then dont visit the thread, its ONE thread, in the OT section. What else Do I have to explain?

after reading about all this LPTPHW drama, it got me thinking.
06-18-2007, 03:10 PM
Greaser you don't care for the thread anyway. Why post here? You never posted in that thread once. ( I think ) So why does it bother you?
06-18-2007, 03:13 PM
it doesnt, but joker and dark have made good arguments for keeping it closed, and i agree with them.
edit: i think i posted twice.

I still believe LPTPHW, can't kill a site.
06-18-2007, 03:30 PM
doesnt kill it, but it will stagnate it.
06-18-2007, 03:37 PM
cloud, please.
I've explained things as clearly as I can!
Hell, that poll's even vastly against you.
The thread wasn't what was killing the site; It was the fact that as soon as anyone became an "active member" they drafted themselves into the thread and rarely posted anywhere else.
This means that the newbies see an inactive looking forum because all the posting is concentrated onto one thread. If it was more spread out it would seem more appealing for the newbies and they'd be more inclined to post.
By locking the thread the "regulars" can't post all their thoughts into that one thread, they are forced to make new threads specific to their purpose, this is more user friendly and will help the site grow. It also removes the mentality of stay in OT and refresh until someone posts something new.

For all you people that claim to not post until it comes back:
You're just fortifying our point.
You guys are claiming, that the only reason you guys visit this forum is for this one thread.
Now tell me. Does that sound like a strong forum to you?
If your only comming here for this one thread, then leave.
We don't need you.
You're not contributing to this site.
This site isn't about OT. Its about the Wii.
If the reason people are comming here is for LPTPHW, then we have to get rid of it. Its hindering WL as a whole, people don't care what else is on the forums they want this one thread. So if we get rid of it, they have no choice but to view the rest of the forum and see what we have to offer. They aren't giving it a chance cause they're too busy with this one thread.

So your telling us to leave, if we don't really want to post in the rest of the forum?
We always post in other places, but as it shows its not getting fun anymore, because theres not as much members, so we post in LPTPHW, then taking out LPTPHW, Then US not wanting to post that much, wont help the site at all.
