Full Version: Was LPTPHW really a bad influence on new members?

Due to the huge controversy between members now, I've decided to make a poll at the interests of myself, Cloud, M@gic, and others who frequently visit the LPTPHW, or just anyone who would like to voice their opinions about the thread.  Out of pure opinion, where do you stand on the topic of LPTPHW being locked?  Please back up your poll answer with facts.  Remember, this could change the fate of this thread.
Umm.. the point of my thread was for this very reason...

Go discuss there.

*requesting lock*

EDIT; nvm, you have a poll :p
Sorry, I didn't mean any harm. I just wanted it to be organized into a poll, that's all.
I shall delete mine.
Ok, this one will be the poll thread.
I'll leave it be :p
Nah, His is much better.

LPTPHW, Didnt affect the site at all. Imo.
That post is way too big for new people to read through (20,000 posts) and the topic continually changes. Those new topics every couple of pages could easily be new threads, which would be more organized for members to discuss topics.
think you need a 'meh, who cares' option

i mean really wasnt more than half a dozen of you guys on LPTPHW lately was there?

how does that hurt anything...
Too many people where posting at once >.<

I really can't deside untill I see what will happen.

Right now we aren't sure if its a menace or not.
In a week, I will have my conclusion.
Its not one post, its a whole thread, thats OT, all of it is OT, there wasn't really any topic, if they wanted to make new threads, they could do it, but I don't want to make a thread that will get 6 Posts, its pretty pointless imo.

During that week will be the calm before no storm.
"Yes, new members shy away from the site when they see it"

A thread. In the OT section. Scares new Members.

Thats stupid in every way.

For everyone who agreed with locking it, for no really good reason, please tell me why.

First. Kindrik. :3

but if you think about it, how many of those topics wouldn't be considered spam if posted in a different section of WL? OT post counts dont count, anyway. so whether its in a huge thread, or in 20,000 smaller threads, they're still gonna be in OT, and activity will still remain mostly off topic. it's pointless to lock the thread.

That's exactly the point. Off Topic needs 20,000 smaller threads that each have a topic, rather than one big one with no topic that only a handful of members use.

Even if we have a huge thread, we can always make other threads.

LPTPHW Talked about anything, and if you wanted to speak of something specific, you can just make a new thread, make 20,000 new threads for all I care, LPTPHW Wont be Affected anyway.
Cloud, go to staff discussion and see the new thread being discussed.

Nobody said they HAD to read the dang thread. And if the reader/poster wants to discuss something specific, he or she can go to the correct board, or have the discussion in OT.

You too Dume Toungue This thread has very little ability to go anywhere, so we've come up with possible ways to fix this, but need our staffs opinion on them before going further.

i concur.

I think it should NOT of been locked. I can't really give good reasons because most have been stated, but its just a fun thread to look at...even if you dont post there.

O by the way, I win Big Grin ...I was the last person to post there.Apart from d4rk but he was just stating that it was locked Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin
The thinking behind locking the thread is that most participants don't really post anywhere else. This causes two problems.

1. A huge unweildly thread that dominates the forum, this will natually be the first thread that a newbie would visit, because it MUST be good to have that many posts. They are then greeted with a conversation which is seemingly impossible to follow unless you have been reading/participating for a few weeks. This results in them feeling extradited and exempt from the discussions, so they leave OT and browse the rest of the forum.

2. They look around and notice there aren't an awful lot of threads with a particularly active discussion. This is because most of the forums active posters are posting in LPTPHW or similar threads. It's only members like Nomad and GFT who shy away from OT who promote active discussion in their appropriate sections. The newbies will then post in all of the active threads and leave, they may come back and notice there has been little discussion in the thread they posted in and either leave and never return or go back and try to get involved with the sect surrounding LPTPHW.

That's the way I see things. But, prove me wrong; you guys keep posting at the same volume you were (just not in LPTPHW) and spread it out over the fourm. I'll monitor the number of non-bouncing new members we get and If it's a negligable increase (or even a decrease) then I'll consider either unlocking the current thread or allowing a new one.

(and don't think that you can get away with not posting for the next couple of weeks to keep the rest of the forum looking dead, because then I'll just cancel the deal.)
