Yesterday, June 19 2007; a film depicting a battle between Good and Evil Nintendo style earned the highest honor at the inaugural Nintendo Short Cut competition. The competition was an open-class one were any filmmaker could send in a video with a Nintendo theme that had to be 3 to 5 minutes long. It allowed young filmmakers to show what they could really do, not to mention the 10 000$ prize would seem quite welcoming. In the end the video Good Vs. Wiivil came out victorious, a video portraying an ice cream shop keeper who was being controlled by two Wii-Remotes, one good, one evil.

Good Vs. Wiivil came out with the win!

Amongst the rest of the 9 finalist 2 other videos came out winning 2nd and 3rd place. Coming in 2nd was a film called Koopa Force, it’s no wonder the film came out in the top 3. Featuring some very impressive animation and some wonderful voice work the film is brilliant. In 3rd place was a film called The Nintendo Offices. This is personally my favorite; the film is very funny and very well done, I’m glad to see that it took 3rd place.

In 3rd place was the hilarious The Nintendo Office

The top ten clips were wonderfully put together and varied from animations, to parodies, to comedies, and a whole lot more. You can also view all of the 10 finalists at Nintendo Shortcuts Competition. For those that made it to the top 10 it is quite an accomplishment, as there were over 200 entrants at the start. Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime had this to say about the competition; “The enthusiastic response to the Short Cuts Showcase proves that users’ love for Nintendo characters and culture extends far beyond their game systems.”I couldn’t agree more with this statement and is evidently true when you consider all of the wonderful films that came out of this competition.

The judges for the competition were, Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America. David Kwok Senior Program Director for the Tribeca Film Festival, and finally, Lew Harris, editorial Director of Movies.com.

Lew Harris had this to say; “I was impressed not just by the quality of the films but also by the different ways the participants chose to represent the games themselves, from film noir to Zelda re-created with humans, a tremendous amount of originality.” While David Kwok had this to say: “There was a great pool of finalists. It’s amazing to see people be so creative in such a short period of time. It shows in the work that the filmmakers had a fun time making them as well and I’m sure visitors to the Tribeca Drive-In Short Film Series at Top of the Rock will enjoy them as much as I did.” I bet the visitors will enjoy them as the top 3 winners will get to display there movies at the Tribeca Drive-In Short Film Series at Top of the Rock.

Amongst other prizes Good Vs. Wiivil’s creator Jack Paccione Jr. will be walking off with 10 000$ a Nintendo Wii system, a Nintendo DS Lite and some Nintendo games. Not to mention a so called “power lunch” with Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Craig Hatkoff. I’m sure Mr.Paccione is one happy man right now and I bet the other 2 winners are as well; as the 2nd and 3rd place winners with receive a Nintendo Wii and a Wii game. While the other 7 finalists will receive a Nintendo DS Lite and a DS game; the 7 finalists are:

The Blue Light Zone: Eye of the Mii-holder by Will D’Angelo of Las Vegas

The Legend of Zelda: The Missing Link by Eric Esteb of Seattle

The Killing of a No Good Goomba by Cole Evans of Austin, Texas

Pretendo by Joshua Mills of Jamestown, N.C.

All My Systems by Lee Terwilliger of Lackawanna, N.Y.

Nintendo News Network by Adam Stackhouse of Williamsburg, Va.

The Last Wii by Sean Schleifer of Sterling, Va.

Well, I’d have to say the Nintendo Short Cuts competition was a great success and I think if you ask those who participated they’d tell you the same thing, and like Lew Harris said “A tremendous amount of originality,” a tremendous amount of originality is what made this contest a wonderful success. I’d like to congratulate everyone who competed in the contest and those who won! I hope to see many more films from them.
