Hi there,

Don't know whether have posted in the correct section....

Currently i've a jap version modded with wiikey set. I've heard that there are games that do automatic fireware update. If i put in a us version game into my jap set, will it brick my set? Should i always keep my set fireware updated before i put in any new us game? Or maybe can list out games that have this automatic update function down here?

Thanks for reading
This should be in the Members Introduction section but Welcome to Wiiloaded! You can either delete this and repost it or one of the Mods can do that for ya.
Actually I'm moving this to Modifications and Customizations, as this question could be helpful to that section.

Yes, certain games with region coding from other areas (J, U, E) will have firmware updates, but if you have the correct firmware from your area (for you, 2.2J I think is the newest), it will not update from the other regions.  Also note that not all will brick your Wii, and some will semi-brick, but yes, some will completely brick your Wii.  In other words, make sure you're always up to date before starting a new game from another region.

BTW, Welcome to WiiLoaded!
Okie... Thanks for the advice...

So as long i kept my firmware updated... everything would be fine as for now.... thanks....
But how are you supposed to keep your japanese Wii updated if your not in japan?
I think he would still be able to update it even if he is not in Japan because they ask in your region settings. He couldn't change it to U.S. however if it is a Japanese Wii and he'll have to use the VC from Japan as well.

Yes, as long as you have the newest version for your area, it will not update the firmware to the same version from another area. The only place you "could" get in trouble is if they release a new firmware set on a game for another region, and they didn't release it yet in your region, but that's not common.

BTW, I had a game from another region update my Wii, before I knew all of this, but I was lucky and didn't get bricked. I've since updated to a newer version from my region, so everything is good!

If you plan to play any out of region games on your Wii you should make sure the disc image has been modified with the WiiBrickBlocker application before hand which removes any updates. It has been updated quite a bit recently and is available in nearly any popular language. Not sure if I can post a link so do a google search for

Is it illegal to play imported games with a modchip? I know you can't play burnt or downloaded copies, but is a legally purchased import game also considered illegal to play?
Depends on the country. In Australia for example it is 100% legal to install a mod chip and buy games from other countries!

In many countries you can burn a copy of a game you already own and preserve the original.
