Dell's are pretty good. Then again, MacBooks are nice

Only go for an apple if you have the money. They're generally quite expensive, and your windows software won't run on it (without installing windows using bootcamp).
And before you think it, I believe its nearly impossible to find pirated Mac software.
I'm not a big fan of dell either, but I guess they're okay if you don't want to spend too much

I would look into brand a little less, at least until you get and idea of what you want to do with it first.
Okay, first thing, pick out a size:
12.1" - Ultra portable, expensive
13.3" - Uncommon, ultra portable, expensive
14.1" - Significantly smaller and lighter than 15.4, but slightly more costly
15.4" - Most common, by far. Most economical, balance of cost/size.
17" - Size allows for many features, big screen, usually not as portable.
Basically, if you're carrying it around with you, go for a smaller size. If you want a desktop replacement, aim for the larger ones (larger size means more features) but don't plan on carrying it around as much.
I personally like 12.1 the best, as they are ultra portable and I take mine everywhere, but they are so expensive that I went with a thin and light 14.1 instead. As I said before, though, you will find the cheapest prices on 15.4" laptops, since they are the most common.
I would then look into what you plan to do with it. Type papers, surf the web, and listen to music? If so, those weekly $400 specials would be plenty for you. Absolutely no reason to pick up a $1000 laptop that you'll never take advantage of (and will depreciate like crazy).
When you are ready to buy, let me know and I'll find you the best price. My friend bought a brand new 14" dual core (t2060) with 1gb ram, 80 gb hdd, dvd DL burner, and vista premium yesterday for $349 (plus tax) out the door (no rebates) from best buy following my advice!

I wouldn't get an Apple, especially if you are wanting to play games on it. And I'm not a fan of Dell myself, we had a Dell computer/printer, and it seemed any parts or accessories we had to buy directly from Dell. It got pretty annoying
I would say go to Circuit City.com and look around there. I bought my laptop a few weeks ago from there, I love it

I can find you one with (much) better specs for at least $100 less, and you can pick it up in a store

Best Buy is currently clearancing their laptops, but you better hurry. If you have Comcast in your area, you can sign up for high speed internet service through Best Buy and they will give you another $100 off the price of a computer. As soon as you walk outside, call Comcast and cancel, simple as pie.
Some of the choices are a 14.1" Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD DL Burner, WiFi, and Vista Premium for $449 - $100 = $349, the same thing but in 15.4" for $499 - $100 = $399, and a 14.1 Celeron 420 with 512MB RAM, DVD burner, Vista Basic, WiFi/Bluetooth for $299 - $100 = $199!
Just go to your local B&M and check out whatever is left!
If you sign up for Comcast, make sure you select "install yourself" and that you provide the modem. I walked 3 other people through the steps so far, and every one of them had zero problems getting $100 off then cancelling service.

I would recommend a Macbook. But it will cost you at least 1400 for a nice one. I always wanted an Apple laptop and I finally decided it was time. I absolutely love it. 13-inch screen is wide, so while it's not as high as others it's not too small at all. I thought it would be until I tried it. Plus I plug in my 17-inch flat panel monitor when I need it.
And in response to D4rk, there is a lot of pirated Mac software out there. You just need to know where to find it. There is also a lot of free software.
You can run windows on a Mac if you can't find an OSX version of the game you want to play. But for games you might want a Macbook Pro since the graphics on the Macbook are from Intel.
