Hacking group warez has released a patch allowing gamers to run Halo 2 and Shadowrun, both released by Microsoft as Windows Vista-only titles, on the firm’s older Windows XP operating system.

It had been claimed that neither title would be able to run successfully using the older DirectX 9 graphics engine, with Microsoft urging gamers to take the plunge and switch to the Vista.

The news is sure to irk Microsoft who may now face an increased delay in some consumers adopting Vista at this early stage. However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Earlier this month Falling Leaf Systemsaid in a press release that it believed Microsoft was deceiving consumers by stating that the titles would only work on Vista, and announced its intentions to release compatability software to disprove the claim.

“Microsoft has, in typical Microsoft fashion, decided to launch their forced migration onslaught in full force with the release of two games that will only run on Windows Vista,” said Falling Leaf Systems CEO Brian Thomason in the press release.

“First they claim that it was impossible to implement DirectX 10 compatibility atop Windows XP, and now they also want us to believe that they couldn’t successfully launch two DirectX 9 based titles on XP either. We plan to expose both theories as patently false.”

It appears Warez has beaten Falling Leaf to its goal, although Windows Live and in-game achievements are features still only availalbe to Vista gamers.

Woot! For Freedom!

Though, were these just DX9 games Masquerading as DX10 or were they actually DX10?
I'm not sure Nancy Drew, maybe you should go investigate............LMAO
Lmao, get em gft77. It was probably a p0s3r Microsoft made to fool people into buying V1574
I really like vista, but Microsoft can GET BENT if they think they're gonna handcuff me into any of that Vista only BS with the games... It's obvious that Microsoft is lying about these gaming needing Vista...who would have ever thought that Microsoft would lie to us?!?!?!?

What's next???? Microsoft Disclaimer: You must wear a plaid tie to play this game on your computer...

gft77 to Apple....get off your asses and let us play decent games on OS X
It's not Apple's fault, people won't port the game to Macs, but if they dont you can still use something like BootCamp, which even though it runs Windows, is pretty nifty.
I've seen a top of the line Apple computer with that huge LCD monitor (largest one they made) and a top of the line Nvidia graphics card choke on Tiger Woods Golf before.... SO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wink

*true story...and my buddy wasn't too happy

That's why you attach that stuff to a PC and not a Mac, you're just asking for disappointment IMO.

If you want games, go out and get a C2D pc with a mid-range radeon for a few hundred (insert currency here)

If you want max settings, go out and get a Gigabyte/Asus mobo, 2/4GB CL2 DDR2, 8800GTX/2900HD (x2 if you've been to the end of the rainbow), C2QX and a watercooling system then OC the hell out of it. (You might wanna pick up a DVD drive, HDD and a case too...)*

If you purely want photoshop, ableton and premier, go for a mac.

If you didn't understand over 50% of option 2, go for option one

Very true, and I do appreciate your expertise on this, but I was just saying..IF Apple did ever make a move for the game market, it would force Microsoft to not be so darn.....anal about all their stuff. Vista only...that's Horse Pucky
well since (according to our site stats) since Windows holds 80% market share, what microsoft says, goes.

And since all of the major game engines are closed source windows things, that's not going to change for a while :/
I am hoping google's little project with the linux community pays off, even though it keeps running into snags, looks pretty cool though, its currently called project looking glass, also korora look pretty sweet which is in beta right now i believe. Now just to get enough people to migrate over so that microsoft can disapear or at least drop the damn prices for there crap!!!
