I wander if the Halo movie will actually be a real epic, or just another flop.

After all, they're pouring shitloads of money into it

I going to bust out laughing if its the worst video game based movie ever.

The Doom movie was teh pwn!!@!$! "BIO FORCE" GUN FTW!!#$!%!!1

^-- that was a sarcastic comment
Halo will flop.

Game movies just plain flop.

Video Games work so well because you control the action and the storylines generally last for 10+ hours.

A movie can't squeeze 10+ hours of story into 2 hours of film unless they cut alot out and alter it to work for the big screen, and its here that they lose their authenticity.

Its a shame because I would love to say I'd seen a video game movie that was awesome... but there are none.
Big problem with video game movies is that they modify the story to make it work for the big screen so non-gamers can folow it... these changes make the movie a good b-movie (Mortal Kombat) or down right garbage (Super Mario Bros.)

Here's an idea, actually make a side story independantr of the games (a' la Tomb Raider or Blood Rayne). something about the game history but doesn't tie into the game events. The LoZ movie (if it ever comes out) should be set before Minish Cap. Halo... the fall of Reach.

At least horor games translate well to movies

Source material. ~75% of video games don't translate to movies well. Those that do, the storylines in them are generally very far fetched and action oriented. These generally lead to bad movies (XXX). And the ones that work generally have blockbuster budgets, something a game movie really hasn't had (unless you count RE or Silent Hill, which were about as successful as other films in their comparable genre.)

Tomb Raider did... and they pulled out some pretty big guns with Angelina Jolie. Despite their huge budget, it was a piece of crap

That would be why I put the qualifier "generally" in that statement... seriously. Tomb Raider was also written/adapted by the guy who wrote The Mask (Jim Carrey movie) and other tv writers and the guy who directed Con Air (not a good movie!) and TV shows. You can pay oodles for a megahit, but if you don't put the right pieces together, you'll get dribble.

The only video game movie I've seen was Advent Children, but I agree with LMX here.

Advent Children was mediocre.

It had great action but the storyline was a REAL let down.

I agree that mostly all games based on movies are horrific excuses to be turned into video games. However, I must admit that I was spellbound by the Harry Potter games, especially Order of the Phoenix (Even though the movie isn't out yet), which lets you explore Hogwarts in amazing detail.

Yes that is the best harry potter game to date especially on the wii the graphics are great everything looks exactly like hogwarts!

it was not! the storyline was pretty cool.

101 minutes isn't enough for a good follow up film to a massive game like FF-VII.
yea i agree with the author. most of the games do suck that are movie based. for example, happy feet for the wii.>>>who the hell is gonna by that crap. you know. i just think they all suck

Even though the majority do suck, the most recent harry potter game is quite a good game and I love playing it Big Grin

but its not games based on movies (which often stink as well)

the article is talking about movies based on games

What about mortal kombat >.< that was a GREAT movie
^sarcastic remark
and i got quite a good laugh it was a great comedy. . . oh wait it wasnt a comedy. .. what about all those cheesy lines and teh horrible acting? OMG my life is ruined. . . video game to movie fail one reason we exspect so much out of them (rightfully so) and then the directors who never play the games try to get creative thinking people will like it >.< and therefore they phail

What else could they really put in?

I wanted more of the Characters, Like Barret too see more, but it was still an awesome movie.

What I wanted, Cloud, was a more expansive story. Not a tacked on story about the reunion for Sephiroth. It was good, but could have been VASTLY improved.
The pokemans movies were alright. Some of them.
But none of the pokemon games were ever based off any of the movies...
