Video game movies suck, and that’s a fact. No, seriously, they all suck – every worthless last one of them. Silent Hill is about as good as they get, and it still isn’t worth the price of the DVD. Unfortunately, not one of the upcoming ones look any better. Why is that? Is there hope? What can be done to fix movie adaptations of games? Or, am I just babbling?
Why is it that game movies fail? It really is a combination of unique factors. The most obvious one is the staff working on these adaptations. Even if we ignore Uwe Boll, most of the people who have brought us the game-to-movie adaptations just aren’t that talented. Or if they are, whatever talent they have is wasted on these movies. This does somewhat come down to the fact that games are licensed properties. The most talented people in Hollywood usually aren’t actually interested in working on someone else’s franchise. They aren’t the only ones to blame, however – the source material generally deserves just as much of the shame.

You know, i really did like the first and second Resident Evil movies. I can't think of any others though besides that and silent hill.
Geeze...I don't find them all crap. Resident Evil was pretty good. I liked some of the game based movies. :l
Silent Hill isn’t worth the price of the DVD.
OOOhhhhhhhhhhh! LZ's gonna getcha!
UhOh..........yeah i thought silent hill was pretty good, actually made you think a little bit.
Source material. ~75% of video games don't translate to movies well. Those that do, the storylines in them are generally very far fetched and action oriented. These generally lead to bad movies (XXX). And the ones that work generally have blockbuster budgets, something a game movie really hasn't had (unless you count RE or Silent Hill, which were about as successful as other films in their comparable genre.)
I wander if the Halo movie will actually be a real epic, or just another flop.
After all, they're pouring shitloads of money into it
UhOh..........yeah i thought silent hill was pretty good, actually made you think a little bit.
I thought it made you think too much, I came out of the cinema thinking "WTH?!, My brain aches"
The Resident Evil movies were pretty good. And can't wait for the Halo movie. Sure, it's hit a bit of a radblock, but still. And Peter Jackson is supposed to be doing something with it, and hes got talent.
That is very true about silent hill, gives one achy brain syndrome or something, and i am hoping that halo really turns out to be decent if they are really poring all that money into it.....it better be i'm in the mood for a decent game movie

Peter Jackson was fired.
Halo movie is on hold.
Look at it this way, there's a Gears of War movie coming. XD
what about Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children? That was a pretty good movie based on a game...
Well, the Video game movies I've seen suck.

Yeah, I love Advent Children, great movie.
Advent Children was mediocre.
It had great action but the storyline was a REAL let down.
Re and Ff7 are the best i have seen so far
what about Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children? That was a pretty good movie based on a game...
AC was an afterthought though that branched off from the original so it had its own subplot which brought a level of believability to it...although I do think even AC was too short, but you can only ask for so much when it comes to one studio bangin out that level of quality work.
If they were to let's say make an actual FFVII movie, they'd have to trilogy the film to make it work. End movie one with Aeris' death, end movie two when the Weapons are unleashed and Cloud falls off into Lifestream, and movie 3 well that's self explanatory.
The main reason for vg movie failures isn't that they don't translate well. It's caused by greedy Hollywood types that just want to make the films because they know fanboys and mongoloids will pay to watch them. Due to this strategy or lack there of, we get writers/and or producers that don't know how to keep the essence of the game in the film.
I agree, most game based movies do suck. Although the re movies were awesome, I think that was just a freak accident. Normally they suck. And silent hill? I thought that was the worst of them all. I feel that the movie should have been more like the first game. I mean where was the girls father? He was the main character in the game, I just thought the movie didn't make sense. I guess they tried to do what they did with RE and give the fans what took place before, leading up to the first game. Oh well, just my 2 cents...
