With 50,000 units sold since March, Sony is ecstatic to exclaim that PS3 is the top selling system in Australia and has been outselling the Wii and Xbox 360 every week. Michael "Wii is a bit pricey" Ephraim, managing director of Sony Australia says, "Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week." Apparently the system is being touted as a Blu-ray player in electronics stores, so that whole lack of games thing isn't bothering the Aussies as much as it is the rest of the planet Earth.

We don't have access to the GfK numbers, but the key thing to observe here is pacing, not actual numbers. Last week the Wii ended up being the fastest-selling console in Australia with the magic number of 100,000 unit. The Wii has sold twice as many units, but has been out since Dec. 7. The PS3 has been consistently selling more units each week since its March 23 launch (except for last week according to Ephraim). We'd call this a win for Sony, except if Australia's been having the same Wii supply problems as the rest of us, that might explain how the PS3 is outselling given its price tag. But we'll give Sony this one for now, a win through spin is still a win.

Well, for a little while anyways

Quote:
Last week, Nintendo Australia was shouting from the rooftops about the success of the Wii down under, with the console becoming the fastest to reach 100,000 units sold down under. Now Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has gone on the offensive, with managing director Michael Ephraim saying the PlayStation 3 has been the number one selling next-gen console in the country since its launch, outselling the Wii and the Xbox 360 almost every week.

In an interview with GameSpot AU, Ephraim quoted figures from data trackers GfK Australia, which show that the PS3 has sold more than 50,000 units since it was launched on March 23, 2007. In comparison, the Wii has sold 100,000 units since its launch on December 7, 2006. "Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," Ephraim said.

"Since March 23, PS3 has been the number one-selling next-gen console in Australia, and this is GfK figures. We've now sold 50,000--and we're very excited about the fact that it's being sold in retailers that are gaming retailers as a gaming device and other things, but as you'll notice it's now being sold in Harvey Norman consumer electronic stores as a Blu-ray player."

Australia's next-gen console sales figures seem to be in marked contrast to Japan's, with figures from May showing that the Wii outsold the PS3 by five units to one.

Lol thanks. Omg I cant beleive I didnt look in the ps3 section, because this has been posted Sad

Someone merge, lock or delete.
And who could blame it.

The PS3 is currently more appealing down under than the Wii. Nintendo is too busy humping the legs of Japan and America to worry about the rest of the world.

So Australia is returning to its Sony roots.
everybody knows that the wii will be the best overall in the next year or so. thats cause its gonna have online play. which is gonna get the crowd. then prolly sony will be second best and then xbox.

100% agree. Microsoft and Nintendo are out dating everyone else and leaving Aussie's at home on a Friday night waiting by the phone. Of course they'll with the one system who shows them some respect.

Why though? Nintendo's online is far from impressive. Microsoft's is top and I'm yet to experience Sony's. I forgive this fact because this is Nintendo's first true venture into the online world.

The point I was raising is that Nintendo is not showing much love for our country. Whilst Sony is doing its best. Now tell me, a gamer is forced to choose between the two. The Wii might have a whole bunch of great titles in the US, but in Australia it only has a few (Zelda, Godfather, SM3) where as the PS3 (I'm fairly certain) has a vast majority of the US games and if not its region free so they can just be imported (unless this changed)

This generation is only just starting though so its too early to call.

Australia is not going to turn the tide of this console war. Sony can have Australia, it doesn't really matter to Microsoft and Nintendo. Sorry to tell you that Megatron.

If they could, Sony would gladly trade Australia for Japan or America.

I quite agree with the points Megatron (LMX, after he changes his name back Toungue) has made.
And I also agree with Rooster.

Nintendo doesn't really care about the Aussie market, IMO. It's much smaller than the US market (and Japan market, if I presume correctly), and they're giving the US more support. They care more about US and Japan, not as much concerned with the other, smaller, markets. They're most likely going to continue doing this.
Sorry to say, LMX, but it's only true... (from what I understand)
Then Nintendo will continue shooting themselves in the foot and will lose more support from us.

The Wii wasn't worth the money I spent on it at launch, I should have been more patient. Oh well, gj Nintendo.

@NinjaRooster: I'm glad you think Nintendo can be so narrow minded as to just ignore smaller markets. Really, that's great business.
Any large company can diversify itself enough to even the smallest customer base, especially when those countries have shown a great deal of product loyalty. Even if that hasn't been the case, it's smart for a company to try and sway those countries or demographics that aren't so "ga ga" over a particular brand.

Its just like trying to get elected at anything. You go for the places where you can get the same amount of votes. Sure you focus a bit on the smaller markets but a majority of your time is spent where you can get the most amount of votes.

exact same principle here with Nintendo and Microsoft, replacing votes with money and the election with the console war. Yes that is good business

So sending those english translations over to Australia to make more money is that difficult to do its not worth the money they'll be making there?

Seriously, all they have to do is send the games there to be sold. They're just shooting themselves in the foot rather then make more money in Australia.
What language do you think they speak in Australia? I really think that game companies aren't doing a good enough job at creating their consoles. If they have to horde systems for American and Japan and leave everyone wanting...then that's kind of foolish. We did have an industrial revolution and we are in a computer age where there are automated systems to do these things.

You'd think there was a mule pulling a rope attached to a mill creating these game consoles for God sakes.
