"Unfortunately it appears that some activations of Apple's new iPhone have gone badly. After waiting in line 36 hours I'm still unable to activate my phone. I'm documenting the AT&T circus call by call on my blog. I've had my hold calls dropped, been patched into other users unable to activate their phone instead of AT&T customer service reps, been told that my wife must get a new phone and that the family plan can't work for me. I've been told that the problem is that I'm not putting a new chip into my iPhone in the slot on the left side of my phone when no slot there exists.

PR Blogger Steve Rubel has also been documenting his problems on his Twitterstream. According to an unscientific poll being conducted by Engadget about half of the people who bought iPhones have had activation trouble with about 38% of problems still unresolved."

I'd like to take out for a steak dinner the person who could remind me of a successful product launch of recent. I'll make it a filet mignon...

I heard about this also and was kind of surprised. Apple isn't exactly my favorite company, but they usually keep the customers happy. A lot of people will say this was AT&T's fault, but I'm surprised this was ironed out before launch. I guess real word use of a product can bring up issues.

My town has two AT&T stores so we had people literally from around the country there to pick up the iPhone, and if I had traveled hundreds and hundreds of miles only to have my phone not working properly with my service provider...I'd be a little miffed.
You wouldn't know if the phone didn't work until you went home. The phones get activated with itunes. A lot of the problems are people with business accounts, or people who moved to a new town and their phone number is associated with their old town. There are some workarounds for the latter issue that you can find online.

I would never trust Cingular to run a successful launch, or service. and AT&T is really just Cingular with a new name.
I saw this on the news and the said the problem was too many people activating at once.
An article I just read said that AT&T believes they have fixed all the problems. They say only 2% had problems, but that might not include people who tried calling 5 times and then gave up.
Just a lot of people trying to do it all at once, not to mention that AT&T are too blame just as much for this as well. I'm sure they'll have it straightened out in no time.
