The votes have been counted and the people (at least the ones who read Edge magazine) have spoken: the best video game in history is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Edge's editor in chief Tony Mott explains Ocarina's timeless appeal:

"Ocarina of Time is nearly ten years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Videogames shows that great game design does not age. In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance."

Ocarina tops a list of the 100 best video games that appears in a 260-page collectors book going on sale tomorrow. Thousands of Edge readers, members of the industry, and the Edge editorial staff voted, kibbitzed and debated on the list--keep reading for a peek at the top ten.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)

2) Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)

3) Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)

4) Half-Life 2 (PC)

5) Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)

6) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)

7) Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)

8) Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)

9) Tetris (Various)

10) Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)

So what'd they miss?

source
for a start they missed Ghosts and goblins for NES. although it was impossibly hard the music just made you want to jack off
Mega Phail.

FFXII Hasn't been out that long and its at number 8?

FFVII Should be second/first Imo, same with FFVIII/IX.

I'm suprised FFVII isn't even there, instead Resident Evil 4? What was he smoking when he made this >_>
This list fails because of Final Fantasy XII
And name how many times you've played FFXII Smile

Half Life 2 fails.
Woot for OoT!
And SMW!
And SM64!
And ALttP!

HUZZAH!!

Big Grin
Ocarina of Time is so FTW that it'll be the greatest game of all time forever. I too wonder about FFXII. What about VII and VIII?
Hard to argue with the list outside of Final Fantasy XII. Not sure how that made it on there. Its probably only the 4th-6th best Final Fantasy game ever made.
The list is ok, I wish pokemon was on there somewhere.
this is so incredibly pointless. sites and magazines may have a point to do this at certain points, like best games of the year in the last edition, but "best game ever" is just a ploy to bring in readers. it's POINTLESS

and we've gone through WAAAAAAY too many threads asking the community what we think is the best game. we've gone through this song and dance time and time again. it's the same story over and over again. can we move on to something to actually talk about?

Pretty much everyone can agree with that. All of the video game magazines and web sites have given this game a perfect rating.

i am beginning to wonder if these lists and others like them (with plenty of nintendo love) could perhaps be a nintendo viral marketing campaign designed to spur virtual console sales...hmmmm

idk, just a little conspiracy theory...
Replace FF-XII with Metroid Prime 1 and I'd agree a bit more.
cant put multiple metroids on the list IMO

i think FFVII > FFXII..maybe its a typo
FF-VII > FF franchise.

And yes, multiple Metroids is acceptable because Metroid Prime is an amazing game. Besides they have multiple Zelda's on there anyway.
thats kool
I don't really agree with this list at all. There are so many games that are more deserving that are not even in this list and then there are some in the list that are head scratchers.
which on eis a head scratcher to you

those are all pretty solid choices imo
You really believe Resident Evil: 4 is the second best game ever made?
Halo and FF-XII are head scratchers.

And RE4 shouldn't be that high.
