Anyone remember when the "Revolution" was announced and people cried for joy? Then the name was changed to Wii and people cried foul. Then motion controls were announced and people were excited again. Then we were hit with an onslaught of party games and we all got bored. Well, thanks to GameStop we'll be seeing less of the hardcore/niche titles and more games of the party variety. GameStop recently announced that due to the outstanding sells of both the Wii and DS, they will stock more games that cater to the "broader consumer audience".
"We note that merchandising to a broader consumer audience will remain a strategic priority for GameStop into 2008"-Colin Sebastian (analyst)
I guess, depending on which side of the coin you reside on this could be either good news or bad news. On one hand you can walk into GameStop with a little more confidence that your game will be on the shelves if you're shopping for a Wii or DS game. Or you could be walking in dreading the thought of them not having your favorite under-the-radar video game due to them having 100 copies of Wii Fit. Either way, this choice by GameStop isn't surprising. If something sells well, stock more of it. You don't have to work or even have experience in sales to know something like that. However, this does lead me to wonder... In the next ten years am I going to have to walk into a game store shamefully and ask the clerk to show me where the "hardcore" games are, only to have him walk me to the back of the store and pull back a black curtain revealing a wall covered with hardcore titles? Although something like that is drastic, it may just happen after seeing this slow but steady shift to the casual audience.
