This week your regular host took a short graduation break but don't fret, I'm here to pick up the pieces and deliver this weeks PAL VC release!
Last week was a very good week for the PAL VC in which we received no less than 4 games and a new console. PAL finally got the Mater System along with two games, the colourful shooter fantasy zone and the classic side scroller which kept your wits about you: Wonder Boy. Joining the Master System were two more games for the recently released current PAL exclusive Commodore 64 as sport game California games and action game Impossible mission joined the two other C64 games (International Karate and Uridium).
But enough about the fantastic PAL week and lets move into the now where Nintendo has resumed normal service with a single release this week. The third game in a classic series of RPGs spanning 26 games, 12 consoles and 17 years. That series is of cause Phantasy star, a true RPG genre defining series.
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom (SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis 800 Wii Points)
Here we have the sequel to Phantasy Star II which is also on the VC but is it better than it? The story follows a young Okarian prince called Rhys, the story begins 1000 years after the great battle between Okaria and Laya. During the marriage ceremony between Rhys and the beautiful Maya; Maya gets kidnapped. Were those the legendary Layans who kidnapped the princess? Whatever the answer might be, Rhys has to find it out on his own. He must find his beloved one...
The game has returned to the medieval setting that wowed gamers in the first Phantasy Star game but shares a very similar battle system to Phantasy Star II. Random turn based battles occur in which you can perform simple moves or special moves which require 'Technique Points'. RPGs can be a hit or a flop based on their battle system and setting, PSIII is neither poor or amazing in this category. Simply put a decent system that's tried and tested and a nice setting which many might find familiar to other RPGs.
It is one of the more mediocre Phantasy Stars as it doesn't quite re-capture the magic of 1 or 2 and they hadn't yet made the amazing Phantasy Star IV but don't let this put you off. It is a nice solid RPG, not the best but the VC needs all the RPG support it can get.
