US News Conference Notes
The Wii US Conference is over, and here are the notes from the speech:
Wii will launch with 4 million worldwide by the end of the year, with the largest share allocated to North America.
The Wii will launch at $249.99 in the Americans, and will have the worldwide debut on November 19th. This marks the second Nintendo system to hit the US before Japan (the Nintendo DS was the first).
The Wii package will come with the console, cables, the sensor bar, one remote with nunchuk attachment, and Wii Sports, which includes Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Boxing, and Bowling. This is the first console to come bundled with a game since SNES released with Super Mario World.
30 titles will be available in the launch window, with roughly half available on launch day. Games carry an MSRP of $49.99, a full $10 less that other next gen games are selling for.
The big news was the Wii portal, designed to bring non-gamers towards the Wii's unique controller. The Wii Channels, as they are called, include Disc, Shop, Mii, Photo, News, Weather, and Internet.
Disc is simply the channel you would select to play your Wii or Gamecube disc.
Shop is the Virtual Console, which will launch with 30 legacy titles and grow by 10 per month. NES games will retail for 500 Wii points, SNES for 800, and N64 for 1000 points. 2000 point cards will be available for $20 and can be acquired online or at retail locations. You can play these games with the classic controller accessory for a truly retro experience! Downloaded games will then have their own channel, and will be yours to own from then on.
The Mii channel will allow users to create and design their own characters that interact with each other, which can then be uploaded to the Wii remote and sent to other Wii consoles. These "Mii's" can then be included in games such as Wii Sports and Warioware, giving games a personal touch.
The photo channel will allow you to view photos and movies from a SD card without having to boot up your computer. You can then make slide shows or turn them into a scrambled puzzle.
The News and Weather channels allow users with an Internet connection to instantly have the recent news and weather sent directly to their Wii.
The Wii Internet, powered by the Opera browser, will allow Wii owners to browse the Internet through the Wii's WiFi (through your home network). It also includes the ability to post messages on a message board or send messages to other Wii's, PC's, or Cellular telephones.
The Wii remote will sell for $39.99, with the nunchuk attachment retailing for an additional $19.99 |
