The world's largest single sport event is taking place this year in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup. EA have today announced that they will, once again, be providing the official game of the tournament.
The game will include all 199 teams that took part in qualification for the tournament, this means you can play as the giants of the world stage such as Brazil and Italy or even some of the lesser known nations such as Andorra. All 10 of the official 2010 World Cup stadiums will be available to play in as well as a selection of stadiums used in qualification from around the world.
The features include a World Cup mode where you can choose any of the 199 teams and take them through their regional qualifying groups and onto the World Cup itself where you can take your team all the way to a virtual reproduction final and possible glory. And for a first time in the series you can take this journey online and choose your nation and battle online against opponents from all over the world to take your team through qualifying and to the World Cup itself. You can help crown your team the EA FIFA World Cup 2010 champions. For those of you familiar with the yearly FIFA games I'm expecting this online mode to work like the Interactive League in the previous two installments, you choose a team and play their real life fixtures each week against an online opponent and winning will earn your team points and collectively everyone who plays will help their team move up the table.
Gameplay improvements include strategies for home and away legs, in-game situation tactics and altitude effects that range from player fatigue to how the ball will travel in the air.
The Nintendo Wii will be receiving their own edition of the World Cup which has promised to have 'an art style that celebrates the cultural vibrancy of the first FIFA World Cup to be held in Africa'. The game will have all 32 teams taking part in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and have an exclusive mode, named after the official mascot of the tournament, Zakumi's Dream Team mode where you start with a selection of random players and by completing challenges and winning games you build and strengthen your team until you're the best there is.
I played the 2006 FIFA World Cup game on the Playstation 2 that was produced by EA and instantly became a huge fan. It built upon FIFA 06 and produced an excellent example of how to produce a licensed sporting game. I'm already a giant fan of FIFA 10 and I'm hoping EA can capture the magic of the World Cup and deliver another great installment when the title is released on April 27th in North America and April 30th in Asia and Europe.
