...well, almost. Nintendo of Japan has announced that the Japanese Wii will have an enhanced version that will be exclusive to the country. Meaning that this "enhanced" Wii will not be appearing in your home any time soon if you're in the America's, Europe, or Australia.

October 31, 2006 - When Nintendo spilled the beans on its launch plans for the upcoming Wii, gamers were disappointed to learn that DVD playback had been removed from the console's feature set. The decision to leave it out was apparently made in order to keep the machine's price down and because Nintendo felt most people already owned DVD players. But according to GamesIndustry.biz, the company has different plans for its homeland.
A spokesperson for Nintendo has revealed that an "enhanced" version of the Wii with DVD playback is due in Japan next year. Before everyone else gets their hopes up, the same spokesperson also stated that there are currently no plans to release the enhanced Wii in the U.S. or Europe.
Nintendo is not revealing exactly when the Wii will be enhanced for Japan, or how much the upgraded version will cost. It is likely there will be other bells and whistles added, but Nintendo is currently focusing on the initial launch.
Not that I personally really need it, but I would get rid of my old DVD player for a Wii DVD add on. I wonder if the update will come in the form of an attachment or if it could just be firmware updates? Or it could possibly be an entirely new, more expensive version of the system, much like what Microsoft and Sony have done with their systems.
