As of today, Playstation 3 consoles around the world seem to be experiencing technical difficulties and are being rendered unable to play games online. Just to make matters worse, some games are even unable to be played offline as well.
Europe, America, Australia, all regions appear to be affected by this strange system error. Sony were contacted to try and discover exactly what has been happening here, and their reply is that they were "looking into it."
Perhaps if it was only PSN connection errors it wouldn't be such a big deal, but some gamers cannot even play offline games. Luke Plunkett over at Kotaku has reported that he is greeted with an error screen when he attempts to play Heavy Rain. Upon exiting out of the error screen, the console reboots and returns him to the main menu screen.
We will try to contact Sony for further information, but so far it appears it will become a waiting game to see how quickly Sony can get to the bottom of this problem.
Have you been a victim of this strange occurrence? And to what degree is it affecting you?
UPDATE: It appears the worst is over and the RTC errors have stopped. PS3's are now able to go online again and games are playable. So that's a huge relief for PS3 owners worldwide. However, a more curious case arises when trying to figure out how this happened and why Sony hadn't already dealt with it. Either way, hopefully a fix will be out soon to prevent it happening in the future.
Game Informer- 95/100: "It's barely a game in the popular sense of the word, but Quantic Dream's masterpiece makes groundbreaking strides in storytelling and character development, demonstrating that interactive entertainment still has a deep well of untapped potential."
1UP- A-: "Though shorter than other epic, multi-disc titles, there's more than enough content in Heavy Rain to warrant a purchase. At the end of my first playthrough I was left utterly satisfied with the conclusion of the story and wanting more titles of this caliber. Heavy Rain may not appeal to every twitch-shooter fan out there, but if you believe games can evolve beyond Pac-Man and Mario then I suggest supporting the amazing work Quantic Dream has done."
IGN- 9/10: "A hell of an experience. Its controversial control scheme actually works really well in allowing the fantastic story to dictate how events play out, and many of the game's scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat. It starts slow and the presentation isn't perfect, but the character development, dialog and story twists will hook you like few games can."
Gamespot- 8.5/10: "Though it suffers from its share of plot and technical problems, Heavy Rain is nonetheless a bold and visionary step forward in the medium of interactive storytelling. Part adventure game and part psychological thriller, Heavy Rain is far from the quick-time-event-powered movie that it may appear to be at first glance. Every action you perform or decision you make--from the simple and mundane to the dark and disturbing--brings you closer to the flawed but realistic characters you manipulate. Their stories become your story, and their hardships become obstacles that you feel compelled to overcome with them. No matter how your adventure plays out, Heavy Rain is a profoundly personal experience that should not be missed."
Giant Bomb- 4/5: "Anyway, these technical issues are minor and only really glaring in contrast to the overall quality of Heavy Rain's plotting and presentation. Interactive drama, if you'd like to call it that, is certainly a young subset of game design, itself such an iterative process that most other games get the chance to build on the work of their numerous predecessors. Heavy Rain doesn't really have that benefit. It's coming out of mostly uncharted territory, and it's an impressive effort for that limitation. Interactive storytelling might not yet be able to evoke the same degree of raw human emotion as more traditional art forms, but this is a big step in the right direction."
Nintendo of Australia were the first of the regions to get their media summit out of the way first, and as a result some news has emerged from the summit which has now concluded for the day. News includes a release date for the Black Nintendo Wii (price included), a release date for the DSiXL date, and a few release windows for a couple of Nintendo's biggest games this year.
Starting off, the black Nintendo Wii will be launching down under on March 11th, for the exact same price you are paying for Wii's now. So if you were on the fence about getting a Wii, then maybe this is a good enough reason to dive in during March. The DSiXL is set to release on the 15th of April, however no price was given for Nintendo's newest DS model.
As for release windows, Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are expected to hit our shelves between the months June and August. Making them a lot closer than I think a lot of people were expecting. Monster Hunter Tri will be available in both a standalone edition and one that comes with a classic control pro. But date was provided for the title however.
Not too much in the way of big news, but release windows for Metroid and Mario is very good news. Obviously the big guns will come out at the US media summit. Metroid will be present tomorrow, in what form is unknown but definitely expect footage and possibly even a demo.

If you are yet to pick up a PSPgo yet, and are waiting for some sort of reason to validate the somewhat expensive purchase. Then Sony have hopefully got the deciding blow for you! Purchase a new PSPgo in the opted time period and you will receive a download coupon for either Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines or LittleBigPlanet PSP.
A game to the value of $US39.99 is definitely a pretty good deal, and definitely a smart move for Sony who are trying to push the PSPgo more than ever. So hopefully this will pick the handheld up some extra sales, to get your hands on one of the two free games then follow these steps:
You must purchase a new PSPgo unit between Thursday, February 18, 2010 and Sunday, March 21, 2010.
To redeem code, you must create a PlayStation Network account or login to your existing account directly from your PSPgo system.
SCEA will then e-mail a code (using the email associated with one’s PSN account), which is good for one qualifying PlayStation Network account to download the game for the PSPgo system, via the PlayStation Store.
All in-game promotion codes must be redeemed by March 31, 2010.
It sounds like a pretty sweet deal, unfortunately early adopters may be out of luck. The redemption process appears to be via signing up for the PlayStation Network, so if you haven't signed up yet then you may still be eligible however there is no confirmation of this.

In a recent interview with Edge Chet Faliszek, Valve writer, was recently asked about Valve's involvement with the PS3. Because as most PS3 owners know, their console has been neglected in terms of Valve games. Apart from, of course, the poorly ported version of The Orange Box.
Well, Chet had the following to say, “Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way. But we’ll look at it, and I’m sure down the road we’ll do it”.
Vague but hopeful words, it appears that PS3 owners will have to wait a little longer to see future Valve titles release on their platform of choice. How long do you think it will be before it becomes reality and what do you think will be the deciding factor? Perhaps it will happen when Half-Life 2 Episode 3 is released.
In an interview with TechDigest, it appears that Yoshinori Kitase (director of Final Fantasy XIII) may have delivered a final blow to those hoping for a Final Fantasy VII remake.
"If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we'd imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together," Kitase explained, "so it's looking pretty unrealistic!"
However, he went on to say, "If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we'd very much like a go at it."
So perhaps it isn't the end of the idea, merely just another delay in the confirmation. Do you think Kitase is just making excuse? Or is he just helping push the remake back until Square Enix eventually start going into debt and pull it out as a money maker?

Epic Mickey appears to have some spectacular twist on Disney's favourite mouse, but sadly as it stands it is a Wii exclusive. Well according to Graham Hopper there is a chance it could come full circle (since the game was originally going to be on PS3 and Xbox 360, but then switched to a Wii exclusive).
Hopper told Gamasutra that the game's core "ink and paint mechanic" made the game ideal for the Wii. However, now that the other consoles are moving into the motion controls direction this could change.
"If we started it 6 months ago we would have potentially thought differently about it," said Hopper. He believes that Disney has a large fan base that have Wii's in their households.
Strangely enough the title was originally meant for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and was later going to be ported to the Wii. The change came about because the Wii version would have needed to be its own game, as opposed to a port. And now it appears it could all come back around thanks to the other consoles now moving into the motion control arena.

Final Fantasy XIII is due to release next month, and as a result there had been some speculation as to whether or not Final Fantasy Versus XIII would be making an appearance at E3 this year. Well, Tetsuya Nomura has come out to discuss the possibility and has declared that due to some difficulties with the world map there is a chance the title will miss E3. Nomura had the following to say on the matter in an interview with Famitsu.
"We were hoping to debut it at E3, but we're not sure now. For displaying characters on the world map, we were originally planning on using the method used by 'FF#,' with a small Noctus running about on the screen, but that didn't look too great, so we ended up switching to the method used by 'FF#.'"
For those who are curious, the #'s did represent numbers but were blocked out by Famitsu to prevent people from guessing which installments Nomura had been referring to. Which leaves the title still shrouded in mystery. Was he referring to a classic Final Fantasy world map? It seems like the most distinct possibility.
Cross those fingers for an E3 appearance for this game, otherwise it seems the next most likely place for it to debut new information will be at the Tokyo Game Show.
